Killing cougars doesn’t solve the “problems” at hand and should stop right now

Government organizations, hunters, and trappers are notorious for wantonly and inhumanely killing millions of nonhuman animals (animals) in their widely ineffective attempt to manage and control “problem” individuals and groups (for detailed discussions and data see and and). Just today I read that more than 550 wolves have been “taken” by hunters and trappers in the Rockies alone this season.

Very Timely Jim.. just this week we had an incident in Cle Elum where a dog owner let his rat terrier out at night and the dog was “taken” by a cougar. WDFW and the sheriff’s department attempted to find and kill the lion. Couldn’t find it.
A group of “us” generated lots of calls and emails to WDFW protesting lethal control.
Great Jerry, I get so tired of hearing people whine about a “cougar problem,” when they moved into the cougar’s territory to begin with.
Glad to hear this.
Oregon’s policy towards cougars is straight out of the dark ages too.
The body count has more than doubled over the last eighteen years. Oregon is now killing more cougars a year than during the bounty era of the 60s. For more information go to:

Thanks for the info and link. Hard to believe from a state that said no to wolf-killing…
Dr. Wielgus put a video presentation on youtube, which he characterizes as “Fifteen minutes of research in 15 minutes.” It’s about 20 minutes long, and is worthwhile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_ZD-PAKhSo
I’m hoping we may see some more research papers out of Wielgus’ Washington State University Large Carnivore Lab later this year.
Well! Isn’t my typeting grand? A more accurate assessment of Weilgus’ statement would be “Fifteen years of research in 15 minutes.”
