“It seems like a waste,” said Senate Minority Leader Gene Davis, D-Salt Lake City. “It’s another challenge to federal authority to protect wildlife. The problem isn’t even here.”

See Above: Big Game Forever Got The Same Amount Last Year To Lobby Against Wolves…Salt Lake Tribune

Update: March 10, 2013

It looks like SFW founder, Don Peay, will be getting a nice fat check, $300,000 to be exact, of taxpayer money,  thanks to the Utah Legislature’s ” natural resources budget committee”,  to lobby against wolves. Don Peay is also a founder ofBig Game Forever.

The Democrats tried their best to remove the money from the spending plan, but to no avail.

Last year, $300,000 was awarded to Big Game Forever to lobby against wolves.  Deja vu’?

And where’s the accountability?

“After hearing a similar pitch from Big Game Forever co-founder Ryan Benson, the Legislature last year appropriated $300,000 to fund wolf-related lobbying, with virtually no oversight of precisely how the money was used or what it accomplished.“…Salt Lake Tribune

  1. Then animal conservation agencies must lobby for wolves and expose the political shenanigans of wild charlatans such as he and political-anti-science, anti-logic of legislatures in ID-MT-WY-UT, and hurt them in their pocket books, because their illogical outlook on wolves is also anti-tourism.

  2. This is a wake up call for all Americans who love wildlife and wild places. Anti-wolf hunting groups are being handed taxpayer money to demonize and lobby against wolves. But wait, according to the The Salt Lake Tribune “There are no Washington lobbyists currently registered for Big Game Forever and have been none since April 1, 2011″. April 2011 correlates with the Senate’s vote to delist wolves via budget rider.

BGF received $300,000 last year to lobby against wolves, virtually the same request Don Peay is making, who just happens to be the co-founder of BGF. It hasn’t even been a year and already the Utah legislature is ready to hand out $300,000 to Don Peay? So if there are no Washington, D.C. lobbyists registered to BGF at this moment and haven’t been since April 2011, then what the heck are they doing with the money? The even bigger question is why did Senate Majority Leader Ralph Okerlund, R-Monroe, who is no friend to the wolf, request this line item in the budget?

Okerlund is….”An outspoken critic of wolves — who also was sponsor of last year’s so-called “Mule Deer Protection Act,” more than doubling the $20 bounty on coyotes — Okerlund received $6,500 in campaign donations last year from the two men requesting the funding.” …The Salt Lake Tribune

    Hmmmm…curiouser and curiouser.
