Before news of a full federal wolf delisting even came off the presses, anti-wolf assholes from the wolfless state of Utah are front and center, spouting their bullshit lines to the press. And the feeble-minded mainstream media are gobbling it up…
In an article just out entitled, “Feds want to remove gray wolf from endangered species list,” Salt Lake City’s Desert News opened with the cutesy lead-in: “Top Utah politicians are howling with delight over a federal proposal to remove the gray wolf from protections under the Endangered Species Act, while advocates are growling in disgust.”
Followed by a quote from Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, “I appreciate the Fish and Wildlife Service hearing our concerns and making this right decision…An unmanaged wolf population threatens livestock and native wildlife, and threatens our communities. I know that our wildlife managers in Utah and throughout the West are fully capable of managing the wolf populations in a way that benefits all.”
That benefits “all”? What about the wolves? Or wolf advocates? Bob Brister with the Utah Environmental Congress was quoted next, trying to counter the senator’s hype:
“We are deeply disappointed with the Obama administration’s decision to delist the gray wolves in the West. State wildlife management agencies have proven to be either incapable or disinclined to manage wolves in an ecologically responsible and humane way.”
Another Utah anti-wolf fanatic, Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, said the decision by the agency is long overdue. “For quite some time, the gray wolf has been ‘recovered’ and the issues with their being listed as an endangered species has limited states from employing responsible management practices, thus allowing the wolves to terrorize public land users and other animal species.”
If the agency ultimately chooses to delist the wolf, management of the species will be rightfully put in the hands of the states, Bishop said.
“I am pleased that states will now be able to actively manage the gray wolf population in a way that is beneficial to the wolf population as well as public land users, the sportsmen’s community, and all those whose livelihoods have been impacted by the current listing,” he said.
[Again, how does active “management” benefit wolves?]
Brister, however, said the decision makes no sense, especially given that Utah has no verified wolf population.
“We have been campaigning for the last three years to get the wolves back into Utah, so this is very disappointing to us,” he said.
The service will have a 90-day comment period on both of its proposals, but the date has not been determined.

Beam the wolves up, Scottie! ( sigh )
If only we had a worm hole to an enlightened future or far back in time!
The only immediate thing is to pool funds and buy up all the wolf habitat we can, post it and fence the a-hole wolf-killers out! It can be a huge wolf study! Politics and court cases take time that wolves don’t have. Still have to go that route, too, but focus more on throwing the bums out and getting good people in office.
There are some who are doing just that in Montana, American Prairie Reserve. I called them and asked about Wolves, they said if wolves come they will be able to find refuge there, but (being in Montana) they have no plans at this time to bring them in. They are bring Genetically pure bison in and buying up a lot of ranch land. I hope some wolves will follow. Here is a link to them http://www.americanprairie.org/news/american-prairie-reserve-featured-by-bloomberg-television/
Good idea, have company today but will follow up.
I have land where I live in Western Maine that is prime wolf habitat. I’m too old to handle more than my small rescue now but if somebody has a charitable status but little or no land for wolves, send me an e-mail or call me. Or just to brainstorm. We need to do a rescue think-tank/wilderness camp-out. And talking personhood for wolves is still on the table, as well! As most of us have almost zero free time now, I don’t know if a real weekend think-tank in Maine can happen but if it does, the bonus is I have a van with a beach pass. 🙂 Sometimes I take friends to the beach to brainstorm. It frees up the mind to focus on one thing. And the privacy is great. Usually, I will meet up at the beach and go out on the lake in truck inner-tubes. There are also picnic tables and facilities and it is free and beautiful. That may be useful to others now that the waters are getting warm. I learned this back in the 80’s when I worked for Community Action. Relax and the ideas flow!

Tragic. My guess is that IF a few wolves happen to cross the state boundaries, they will NOT be welcomed. No chance for residency in Utah, nosireee. I have to laugh at how they refer to themselves as having a “sportmen’s community”. My, how they delude themselves. .
On another note, I’m blown away by the hatred for predators and the subsequent free-for-all with trapping and snaring (hounding, too, in some cases). Their capacity for cruelty and abuse of wildlife knows no bounds. I find myself wishing for things I never knew I was even capable of thinking.
Well said!
Yes, well said, I second that! And I better not say what I really think of those twist-toed, inbred redneck wolf-killers, kids read this blog.

I just want to say this Jim, sitting here sick again with a flip-flop about our wolves once again tossed under the thrill kill bus. Please remember, as we all scramble to try to save the “west wolves” Wisconsin is quietly raging on with the Dog vs Wolf brutal slaughter going to happen October 15th, and the Midwestern wolves are also getting murdered. Minnesota has been battling hard to save theirs and losing. With this de-listing the whole USA is going to watch all the wolves get murdered. Dark Times are ahead. Let’s try to REVOLT! Stay strong, and remove these damn politicians! Left and Right. They all need to go, time to take back our country… ? think so?
We haven’t forgotten. That’s why I said start buying up land and rescuing wolves. For more info, e-mail zzz_sleeping_wolf@yahoo.com, I will post a brief how-to on the cheap, state by state.
Melody maybe you should contact these people American Prairie reserve http://www.americanprairie.org/news/american-prairie-reserve-featured-by-bloomberg-television/
I’m looking forward to the “how to”, Jim. The next question will be: How to keep poachers OFF.
Gail, I will get to it, have guests today. Also, I am looking for ideas as well. In Maine, we can post the land every 50 feet. I still haven’t figured out how to post the wetlands at the bottom of the mountain. I will find out. As for getting rid of the poachers, I would yell “landowner, private property” and shoot in the air. That should get rid of them. My grandfather used to hollar “The first one’s rock salt, the next one means business!” I have a friend who has no problem putting a few slugs in their engine block as long as he knows who’s truck it is. You can take cellphone photos and text your local game wardens their license plate and VIN numbers. If there are traps on your land, and you have it posted, feel free to destroy them. I learned a trick from another friend…I have a 3/4 ton Suburban yard truck. Anything I may want to flatten, I put on a hard surface, cover with plywood and drive over it. That works great if you manage to acquire bear hounder’s dog’s radio collars. Those will set them back a week’s pay, each. Hope that helps. Oh, I heard of someone putting hounder’s radio collars on city bus frames! 🙂
Jim, please step in with more ideas.
