Earth First! Media has released a manual which provides detailed information for disrupting wolf hunting in those states that allow it. Titled The Earth First! Wolf Hunting Sabotage Manual, the text, complete with step-by-step graphics, explains how to find and destroy wolf traps, handle live trapped wolves in order to release them, and various methods, including the use of air-compressed horns and smoke-bombs, for stopping wolf hunts.

The authors of the manual describe themselves as,  “hunters and proud of it,” adding, “But we aren’t proud of what passes for hunting these days and especially for what passes as ‘sportsman’ hunting. Somehow, the National Rifle Association, yuppie trophy hunters, cattle barons…

  1. Hey Jim, I was reading it just before you posted the link. Obviously, this is extremely helpful but a little dated. Both trappers and the law use wildlife cameras. Take those necessary precautions. Not only fingerprints but also DNA must be a consideration, so tie up hair under a hat with a pull-down mask. Knit one yourself, orange on one side, winter camo colors on the other. Stores have video cameras, avoid especially the big box stores. Go shopping on different days at the town dump. Bring the dumpkeeper a refreshment and and a magazine or that day’s newspaper to read. Dumpkeepers know everyone in town, most of their business, too. It’s an excellent day job if you want to find out who is up to what by what they say, by what they throw away and by how you are treated by them. You learn what they drive, too. Very helpful.

Real-time info… net-10 is your friend. 🙂 shut off the GPS on your phone unless you really need it. Password protect you device and have active virus scanning program running for android devices! Stage a friend in a tree stand on high ground that can see you and warn of dangers. Friend should have a professional camera with an array of lenses. Also another disposable cellphone. Any old braindead cellphone with a good battery will dial 911.

Boots and shoes… old fashioned ‘rubbers’ the shoe kind… haha… can be your friend. Slip them over your boots or shoes, have several different pairs as well as the kind that pull over boots. Another trick is to glue old carpet to some cheap sneakers. You can make moccasins out of naugahyde… get scraps from somebody who repairs boat chairs. It is free, waterproof and not uncomfortable with a couple pair of socks on. There are instructions online and in the old TMEN magazines. Put on Crocs with a couple of pairs of socks over them. Still watch out you don’t leave tracks.

Transportation… strides have been made with electric powered scooters. I mean the 36 volt kind. Nearly silent, Earth friendly, they recharge for years, just remember not to ride them through water that could get at the batteries.

Before you set off to set free wolves, you should spend some time as a volunteer at a wolf sanctuary. Get to know wolves very well. Know how to think like a wolf. And you damn well better know advanced first aid and make a portable, waterproof bag of supplies. It could quickly turn into a rescue situation.
Carry some kind of blood coagulating powder such as quick-stop. Wolf sanctuaries will know vets willing to work on wolves and if you volunteer, you will eventually know who is an activist that you can trust.

    • I forgot to mention conibear traps as did the manual. This could complicate the pole and loop method. Also, there may be severe injuries involved with a conibear trap so you may have to PTS the animal. Be emotionally ready for that.
Another thing… if attempting a rescue, bring an XL cage muzzle and collar with tags on it. GSD mix works. You can get needles at Tractor Supply and I am told lidocaine is available under another name from chemical supply wholesalers but I haven’t yet checked who. Things will go much better if you can inject the victim with the proper dose of pain killer. This is a two or three person project. Tie the backstrap of the muzzle to the back of the collar so the victim can’t remove the muzzle. And tie them so they can’t reach the limb in the trap or your hand. Then attempt to free them when the lidocaine takes effect. This only kills local pain, they will be fully alert. If you are attempting a rescue, call for a trusted friend to bring a very solid crate and some plywood boards with handles on the back. Bring a sturdy sled to haul the crated creature out of the woods. If it’s a wide path, use an old car hood.
Now for the most serious issue…is the wolf lactating? If so you have another job on your hands. Get your mommy wolf safe in a tall enclosure of heavy duty chainlink fence. Preferably inside a garage. Then go looking for the pups, they will die in three to five days without their mom. Howling might help find them? Back-tracking the mom’s steps from the trap could take you many miles and it is an emergency so be prepared. The den shouldn’t be too far from a water source. Make sure mom has lots of water in her enclosure. She needs to make milk. I have found that good dog food with at least 27% protein will work until you can get mom and babies to a sanctuary.
Don’t forget, FWS has drones, be alert. Also, any photos you take with your cellphone on site may gave the GPS location on them unless you can turn the GPS off, still, it can be determined by triangulation of towers to very nearby. Cyber security is not my specialty but I know trustworthy experts. Two can play the drone game. I don’t have one but I imagine a person could rig one and locate traps and maybe also spring them? Certainly, that would eliminate being shot at! And a good tool to ID poachers!
Just be careful and know what you are doing in the woods! My Native grampa taught me most of what I know… he has gone back to stardust many Winters now. I hope I have made him proud, he taught me well.

  2. I am giving them a donation today and ordering my manual!
YES! this is so awesome…I am reading “monkey wrench gang” by Edward Abbey now and just finished his “fire on the mountain” …What a genius and I love the FIRSTERS!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

    • Dywane, I have no idea where Geoff is, possibly writing a book? But I don’t know. Sure do miss him, too. But I will chat with you when I am in need of a rest, which is a lot these days. I’ve been trying to fill in the blanks while people are mostly ‘on vacation’. I don’t want Jim’s blog to be empty. It’s too good to not get in here and see what is happening! In fact, Jim has the most fearless and educational blog going!
At least I think so and I am used to hanging out in RL with some serious think-tank folks. I love to brainstorm problems. I love that EF! is focusing on wolves with intensity. The anger in this country should be causing the gov’t to relist wolves but they haven’t yet. I have come to believe, beside the usual suspects, cattlemen and Elmers, that the gov’t is being pressured by international energy corporations. They can’t frack-up the wolf habitat if they are endangered on the ESA. In fact, I think wolves are the test case to dismantle the ESA. If you look on wikipedia for NAFTA, SPP, TPP and super corridor map, you will see that it lines up with known wolf habitat. I think their plan is to exterminate wolves before the next election cycle? What do you think?

      • I’m still here! The manual belongs in every ARA’s library together with the DoD training manuals on sniping and how to construct booby traps.

And I agree totally with Melody about Jim’s blog. Not a day goes by that I don’t read it.

  3. We need to start spreading a new message. As part of undermining wolf hunting we need to teach wolves about predator calls and electronic predator calls. I have seen this work with coyotes. They will only come to the call one time (assuming they are not shot). It is a pathetically easy way to kill coyotes or wolves. The puppy distress call is especially effective. They may have to be taught the sound of several types of calls. The point is once they discover humans are the source they become more wary. I can’t help but think this would end a lot of the wolf mortality around Yellowstone. They will hear the sound from a mile and run full out to the source which they can determine within a few feet. Hold perfectly still and watch. It works well to have several people back to back. If you are still they quite likely will not recognize a human from a stump or rock unless by smell. It seems using predator calls (electronic or mechanical) would not only teach wolves but would also be a good way to get pictures. The biggest problem I’ve seen people have with doing this is they cannot hold still even for the two or three minutes at most that is required.

      • Worse yet, some scumbag wolf-hater nails puppies by the paws to trees. He gets them off craigslist and pretends he will give them a great home. (Never list pets for free) Instead of a great home, he pounds nails through their innocent baby feet. Of course they scream and cry, which draws wolves to the rescue and the scumbag blasts a whole pack of wolves! I hope he dies cold, alone and in a lot of pain someday when karma catches up with him! Never underestimate these vicious wolf-haters, they are mostly psychopaths who get off torturing innocent animals, even raping them! Then post it knowing facebook doesn’t care. I know of one preferential sexual sadist with a thing for black haired wolves. Also may be the cause of some of the missing Native women in BC? That’s just an educated guess. I don’t know who he is but his accent says he is from NYC. It will be a happy day for wolves if he falls through thin ice! I don’t even want to think about what these freaks might have tied up in the basement. Normally psychopaths don’t play well with others but now they make friends with each other online and try to one up each other’s sick posts. I so don’t understand why law enforcement doesn’t crack down hard on them? They know these freaks usually start on animals before graduating on to people. They would rather bust animal rights activists.

  4. reminds me of a duck sabotage we did yrs ago.
We built a 6ft foam decoy, painted it bright orange & yellow & secured it on a row boat. 3of us climbed aboard this garish & top heavy vessel, bristling w/shotguns. We discharged approx 300 rounds between 5-7am till state patrol came & told us we were interfering in a duck hunt.
There is no law saying animal rights persons cannot “hunt” if our licenses were all in order & there is no law to prevent bad hunters from shooting at targets that we ‘thought looked like ducks’!!
State patrol gave us a ticket for bad parking which was dismissed in court….
No ducks were killed on Crescent Lake that morning
