Defenders of Wildlife on wolf and coyote “derby” hunt:
We have just learned that a “hunters’ rights organization” has scheduled a wolf-killing competition for the week after Christmas. Prizes will be awarded for such hunting objectives as killing the largest wolf and the most female coyotes.
There’s even a “youth division” prize for children as young as 10 take part in the bloodshed.
Wolf slaughter is out of control. Already, 154 wolves have been killed in Idaho since hunting season began on August 30. This barbaric competitive slaughter promises to raise that number even higher.
Organizers of this so-called wolf derby admit that one purpose of the event is to show the world that no one can stop them from killing wolves – not you, not me, and especially not the federal government. It’s a horrific demonstration of what happens when wolves are prematurely stripped of Endangered Species Act protection.
And it’s a horrifying preview of more slaughters to come if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) moves forward with their
proposal to delist nearly all gray wolves in the Lower 48.
Those Idaho hunters are outright wrong – America’s wolves belong to all of us. And to enlist children in the wholesale killing is beyond the pale.

Time to sue USFWS and everyone involved in delisting wolves!Also petition the court to stop the above mentioned slaughter.
I heard a troubling fact. Many Red States are afraid of the votes of students and have made laws that a student I D can not be used to vote but gun permit can! I will be glad when all these psychos shoot at each other in the woods over a trophy animal and prize money. Times are tough, it’s only a matter of time if the prize is big? Fear not, these idiots will behave so badly, the feds will have to relocate the area wolves. But only once their numbers have reached endangered status.
Jim, I know you have to go against this but I have been saying all along, it is time to rescue wild wolf pups who are orphaned. It is the only way to ensure a biodiverse wolf population. And head off wolf extinction! WS will gas them if we don’t! Wolf pups come in the Spring. If we don’t rescue, wolves will be slaughtered to the point that they may never recover. Obama doesn’t care. USFWS DOESN’T CARE! SALLY JEWELL MAKES MONEY SELLING HUNTING GEAR SO SHE SURELY DOESN’T CARE!
Good comment-thanks. We have to see the total picture, don’t we? We have a very conservative country full of rednecks. Even though the majority of people do not hunt, trap or ranch, this coalition of ignorant, prejudiced people who exploit animals are politically powerful, and they use that advantage because they are very vocal. Many well-meaning people have fallen for the myths of “hunters are conservationists” “wildlife needs population control,” and ranching is “good for the land & sustainable,” and they do nothing to oppose these ludicrous claims. Hunterstrappers are also ranchers, and ranchers here in The West sell permits to hunt/trap all the time. They also are behind all legislation to re-introduce species or to protect them. They also have instituted dangerous “Ag-gag” laws, which now make it very difficult for humane groups to investigate animal cruelty whether in animal factories, slaughter houses, ranching operations, etc.
We need a large, vociferous movement to attack & expose these animal killers and slavers, if we want to stop this hideous slaughter. http://www.foranimals.org
