Hunting guide permanently banned in plea deal

[The lesson here is, you can hunt and kill all you want, but you’d better not “waste” anything.]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The license of an Alaska hunting guide has been permanently revoked as part of a plea agreement.

Alaska State Troopers say 45-year-old Michael Vanning of Verdale, Wash., pleaded guilty last week to guide offenses near Fort Yukon and Kotzebue.

The offenses include wanton waste, failure to salvage game and failure to supervise clients and assistant guides.

Vanning was fined $90,000, with $80,000 suspended, and banned from hunting for 12 years.

Vanning owned Gateway Guiding Inc. and operated sheep, grizzly bear and moose hunts.

The state dismissed other cases from Sand Point and Fairbanks. He had faced charges of guiding on private land, failing to report a violation and possessing or transporting illegally taken game.

The sentence is Vanning’s third since 1998. He forfeited an airplane in a previous case.

  1. I guess they finally cracked down on the worst psychopath they could find in Alaska to set an example? Now all the other woods psychos are laughing and thinking how much smarter they are.

    • I do too, Ida! But until wildlife commissions are publically funded from the State general budget funds, and not just by killers of animals, there will be a shortage of Wardens and enforcement. Until the commission is at least a real representation of the general public, not just trophy hunters and guides, no real change will happen.
The woods are not safe for family activities, for which the parks were meant to be! The President can fix the federal lands by Executive Order banning hunting on federal lands. The State parks are handled by a State Parks Commissioner. We need to quit whining and work together to change how things are done, State by State. All these commissioners are appointed by the governor. These should be by election by the citizens. Only then will we get more Wardens to make things safe for families again. And we need to close loopholes so we don’t get situations like the Malamute, Little Dave, slaughtered by a wolf hater!
I am glad the man was arrested in Alaska but that has to happen every day, all over the country!
