The following quote is from Lynn Jacobs’ Waste of the West: Public Lands Ranching: Copyright 1991:
“In the early years, grazing industry & government were …synonymous. Community, county & state governments passed stock killer laws, supplied bounties, and generally helped kill predators whenever they could. Federal Involvement began in 1890, leading to creation of USDA’s Biological Survey. In 1907 private & government interests killed at least 1800 gray wolves and 18,000 coyotes. Later, in 1931, Congress enacted the Animal Damage Control Act which authorized the Sec. of Agriculture to eradicate a host of ‘destructive’ animals, including wolves (which had already been…nearly decimated from Western ranges), coyotes, bobcats, prairie dogs, gophers, ground squirrels, rabbits, hawks & others”
“ADC” became the government-sanctioned killing machine for the environmentally destructive livestock industry. This horrible agency has existed
And so it goes today. Nothing has changed. How many “wolf people” today realize that the Wildlife Services (aka Animal Damage Control) is directly involved in the Mexican wolf “reintroduction management plan here in the southwest? This was sanctioned by many wildlife groups. This is why no wolves (or other predators) in The West will ever be safe or allowed to roam freely. As long as we allow Public Lands Ranching and Wildlife Services to exist, there is no hope for these native animals. It is time to face the stark reality.
There is No Good Ranching, and No Good predator control.
I believe the “Waste of the West” publication can still be seen on-line–but it no longer is in print.
This is a very disturbing film. I watched it online. I hope everyone watches it and starts screaming bloody murder.
