Jack, AL, United States (4E Sports) – The Alabama Dog Hunters Association, headed by Don Knight, plans to court its 10,000 members to back a proposed amendment that would enshrine the right to “hunt, fish and harvest wildlife” in the state’s constitution.

Knight is worried that animal-rights groups around the country are intent on restricting his cherished pastime by pushing measures that, for instance, would forbid the use of dogs to pursue game.

“They’re just nipping away at it any way they can,” said Knight.

Both chambers of the state legislature voted overwhelmingly earlier this spring to place the question on the November ballot. The effort, if it succeeds, would strengthen an amendment passed in 1996.

Similar efforts, which have been promoted by the National Rifle Association and sportsmen’s groups in recent years, are unfolding in eight other states, while 17, including Alabama, already have such constitutional guarantees.

A proposed amendment to create a constitutional right to hunt and fish also will appear on the November ballot in Mississippi while similar bills were introduced or carried over in Indiana, Missouri, West Virginia and four other states this year.

Some animal-rights organizations say fears of outright hunting bans are unfounded.

The amendments “are largely an overreaction to efforts that seek to curb abusive or unsporting practices,” such as using dogs to corner and tree bears, or baiting animals with food, said Michael Markarian, chief program and policy officer at the Humane Society of the U.S. “Eliminating bear baiting doesn’t mean there’s no bear hunting.”

In Maine, a ballot proposal this fall would prohibit bear hunting with bait, dogs or traps.

In California, two laws tightening hunting restrictions were signed in the past two years: one banning bear and bobcat hunting with dogs, the other use of lead ammunition.

The second law is aimed at protecting condors and other wildlife that sometimes scavenge carrion with lead fragments in it.

And a lawsuit filed by conservation groups in North Carolina last year seeks to ban coyote hunting in a region of the state populated with endangered red wolves, which are sometimes mistaken for coyotes.

Data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service show that hunting-license sales peaked in the early 1980s, then began to steadily decline. Researchers point to a variety of reasons, including urbanization, the shrinking availability of land for hunting and the rise of more-protective views toward wildlife.

However, the agency’s most recent national survey, conducted every five years, found that the number of hunters increased by 9% between 2006 and 2011.

  1. I hate those fuckers at the NRA and Safari Club international along with the dog hunters. A politically incorrect thing to say but I’m trusting you’ll not pass it on. These are minority interests and they are slaughtering every animal they come across. Those god damn dogs running loose in the woods shrieking and frightening every living animal they come across. What kind of hell on earth people make for wildlife. It just sucks

  2. Last gurgles dying moans of a dying sports: The “sportsmen” are worried and so politically active in protecting their killing traditions, last gasps!

  3. Regarding the seeming resurgence of hunting and trapping and wildlife management (killing): I think it is mostly, really, really, a right brain thing, like what is going on with the Tea Party and the right. They see their way of life threatened, their traditions, their God given right to hunt and trap threatened and manage wildlife for the benefit of the few (hunters, trappers, ranchers), and they are doubling down on asserting their rights by having crazy hunts in and out of usual seasons, urban/suburban kills of wildlife, action at the state legislative levels and even in congress to enshrine their God given rights and traditions of killing wildlife through hunting and trapping and management, extended seasons on wolves, killing contests, hired assassins of wolves. Probably even the wildlife agencies at the state and federal levels are reacting the same way: They feel threatened in their traditions and their badge of expertise by conservation groups questioning their expertise, of which they manifest little. But are the wildlife killing sports really dying? It all may be a little like the far right on other political matters, and this hunting and trapping business has become very politicized, they are their own worse enemies because they look crazy and excessive to others (because they are), and they will slowly, hopefully, lose support. One of the essential problems is that the resurgence is buttressed by an alliance of the few (hunters, trappers, ranchers) and the state (right states minded especially) and federal wildlife agencies.

  4. Very little of what hunters call hunting is actually hunting. Ambushing a moose or grizzly while they are trying to eat is not hunting, nor is using a pack of rabid mutts to chase and rip a coyote or fox to shreds. I have all the data from the USFWS- as much as they would love to see a 9% increase that hasn’t happened. There was no increase…..hunters need a wake up call. They are predator haters. They are paranoid. There is no concept of stewardship or ethics…..

  5. Americans are going in the opposite direction…..they are becoming more stupid and barbaric. Only a few intelligent beings and most of those are imported from other countries. The U.S is the most bigotted, ignorant, religious country in the world. 86% of Americans believe in angels and fairies. I think that sums it up. Farm factories started here and the worst serial killers were born here as well as having the highest rate of murders until Mexico’s cartel came into power but they don’t kill for pleasure as Americans do; even if base and greedy, they kill for a reason other than seeing a being in pain.

  6. I am afraid lexiestarlight is right. There are a few of us here with intelligence but I am constantly amazed at what I find out — people I think might have a brain turning out to believe in fairies is one I just can’t quite get over.

  7. The ONLY things humans can “harvest” is what they seed! Such as fruits, vegetables, seeds, roots, lentils and nuts! Everyone else with eyes, mouth, heart, eyes, ears, limbs, souls, feelings and blood running through their veins are living beings. If one chose to murder it is called CRIME! I can’t even believe the audacity some have allowing themselves to murder any animal they can…for profits, “fun”and “sport”. The more they take the more they want. It will NEVER be enough…just as drug addicts…as long as there are animals…sad, pathetic, sadists,no morals,no ethics,no compassion,no respect for life and others. PURE EVIL.
