The dreaded so-called “Sportsmen’s Act” is back.
Yet again, a small faction of wealthy trophy hunters is pressuring your elected officials to allow the importation of threatened polar bear trophies from Canada. They also want to open millions of acres of public lands to
sport hunting and commercial trapping, without evaluating possible implications on animals, habitat and Americans who enjoy our nation’s wild spaces. They are also fighting to keep pumping tons of toxic lead ammunition into the environment, poisoning the land and wildlife, even when non-lead ammo is readily available.
Please make a brief, polite phone call today to your Senators and urge them to OPPOSE S. 405, the Sportsmen’s Act, and protect our wildlife and wildlands.
Wildlife needs strong voices like yours to stand up for them. After you call, don’t forget to send a follow-up message»
I’ve already contacted my two legislators (Risch & Crapo – Idaho), but they won’t listen. I’m sure they are both “sportsmen.” Got a letter today from Risch in response to my request that he NOT support delisting of wolves. As expected, he confirms that he supports delisting and is satisfied with the way wolves are being “managed” in Idaho. There is simply no common ground when it comes to these throwbacks.
That’s the problem with these thoughtless “action” alerts, which have nothing to do with action. A quick Google search of the bill will show that Risch, as a member of the “Sportsmen’s Caucus” is a major co-sponsor, so would hardly change his mind in response to a quick e-mail, One of the senators I’m stuck with, Sen. Martin Heinrich, introduced the bill. Yet Heinrich continues to enjoy the support of almost all conservation groups as well as other liberal lobbies.

Part of the reason I posted that action alert is to let folks here know that the bill is still out there. Even Dems like Sen. Maria Cantwell supports the “sportsman’s act” so it’s not very inspiring to act politically.
Thank you, Jim. They promised it would be back so I’m not surprised … but my heart sinks every time we have to fight against the big guns behind these violent and grotesque acts.
I know just how you feel; it’s a war of attrition.
