The Indonesian Government: Shut down Surabaya Zoo

Why this is important

The conditions the animals are kept in at Surabaya Zoo are bleak, cruel, and completely inadequate. Many animals are sick and starving, and dozens die every month from bad or inappropriate food, cramped conditions with little to no enrichment, unsuitable environments, forced restraints, poor veterinary attention, and a general lack of animal welfare.

Please support the closure of this zoo, and the relocation of its animals to better facilities in properly managed and funded sanctuaries, where they can be given the full care and treatment that they need and deserve.

    • The zoo has been hit by uncontrolled breeding, a lack of funding for general animal welfare, and suspicions that staff may be involved in illegal wildlife trafficking. It was taken over by the city administration in July, after years under a government-appointed temporary management team.

You know, I really hate it when humans wont accept responsibility for their own bad behavior – as if it comes from outside forces, or the writers try to sanitize it. The zoo was ‘hit by’ uncontrolled breeding? How about the zoo was an active participant in uncontrolled breeding? This place sounds like a hellhole for animals. No one has a right to keep animals in captivity. “Lack of funding” is another word for can’t afford. If they can’t afford even basic requirements like food, water and cleanliness, (not to mention selling off animals in the illegal wildlife trade), they need to be shut down or not be allowed to open, period.

  1. Sad that so many places decide they want zoos when they do not have the expertise, the resources, or even the will to provide a good life for the animals. I wish they would think about the lives they will responsible for before they start. Some places may not believe they owe the animals anything, that they are there just for human viewing and entertainment. Some places end up in wars and situations so bad that the animals can’t be cared for. I always hope other countries will step in and offer rescue and that the host countries will then think of the animals’ needs and allow them to go to a better life.

  2. I shudder to think of what happens to poor captive animals during wars – starvation, killed by spiteful, hepped up soldiers, or eaten, by humans. We’re really quite a civilized bunch, aren’t we.

  3. I hope this place gets closed soon, I cried after reading about it, hope those who work there get to live in cages with no food!!!! KARMA
