“It is with deep sadness to announce the passing of Chifuti Safaris professional hunter Ian Gibson. Ian was tragically killed by an elephant bull earlier today while guiding and elephant hunt in Chewore North (lower Zambezi Valley).

The details are just starting to emerge as we write this. However it appears that Ian and his client had been on the tracks of an elephant bull for approximately five hours when they decided to take a break and allow the client to rest. Feeling he was quite close to the elephant, Ian and his tracker Robert continued to follow the tracks in hopes of getting a look at the ivory as the client, stayed with the game scout to rest. Robert indicated the bull was in musth. They eventually caught up to the bull, spotting him at about 50-100 meters. The bull instantly turned and began a full charge. Ian and Robert began shouting in order to stop the charge. At very close range, Ian was able to get off one shot before the bull killed him. The scene was very graphic.”

  1. My friend Joanne White and I were posting on a thread about this. I commented that I like how they call us evil for being glad they are dead, completely missing the point that the world is a far better place without them. Joanne pointed out the massive number of likes vs. dislikes agreeing with those sentiments on this thread – just astonishing!

    • If they killed the elephant afterwards for his bravery and defending himself I will be spitting mad–brave elephant–he deserves a medal for courage-he had no cowardly gun to defend himself.

  2. There are over 700 billion people on this earth.
There are fewer than 500,000 elephants.
The elephant was in his own habitat.
The hunter was in elephant’s habitat.
The hunter tried to kill the elephant.
    The elephant killed the hunter.

I hope the elephant is okay.

  3. They wanted to know the size of the elephant’s ivory – disgusting when so many are being taken and it will be the demise of elephants in the wild. Can’t feel sorry for Ian.

  4. Not a tear shed by me – karma – I would rather the elephants life any day over a profiteering trophy hunter slaughtering this magnificent creature for money. Have a feeling he’s heading down rather than up, what you reap you sow

  5. Sadly, it’s the risk that goes along with hunting (even tho humans manipulate the odds to their favor most of the time). But, they died doing what they loved – killing, or trying to. They can’t all be Kendall Jones, in canned hunts. (Thank God!)

    • You’re right! We don’t have to suffer through looking at another grinning fool next to a dead animal. I hope the elephant survives. What a tale to tell his grandchildren!

  6. Evil scum deserved to die. They world is much better off. Every sport hunter in the world deserves a slow painful death

  7. Maybe if he had not being looking for trouble he would not have got what he got–look for trouble-expect to get it–sorry no sympathy for stupidity. Elephants are highly intelligent, social beings-with feelings and families–just like “humans” except they are better and far more superior. Elephant was minding his own business-they were invading his space-he was in musth–message here is shoot with a camera-not guns of death. Leave Africa’s heritage the hell alone. Born free, live free. Respect our wildlife-not kill them

  8. The world needs to start valuing the lives and wellbeing of animals as much as it does for humans, and no less. That, I think, is the fundamental reason why people automatically assume it’s so sad when a human dies, but if it’s an animal, it’s just “oh it’s an animal, who cares.”

It’s the reason people defending the hunter go on ranting things like “omg this guy had a family, friends, I knew him at so and so and this and that.” Well, guess what, animals have family too, they can develop bonds with others, they want to nurture and protect their babies, and they want to live, just as much as another human would want to live. They don’t want to die. They value being able to live happily enough, just as much as the next human would. They feel fear for their lives like we feel fear for their lives. But as long as people think applying the argument for a human sounds ridiculous when doing so for animals, then that’s how you know when they’re biased. We as a species have sadly not yet accepted that animals’ lives and wellbeing matter as much as that of humans does.

  9. so a hunter became the hunted at the last second…that’s AWESOME! He went there to hunt and elephant to most likely to end the life of an unaware creature and instead the animal took him down…ahh finally something like this happens. Now it’s time for the lions to do the same along with the wolves and rhinos

  10. the elephant had every right to be there he

was protecting his territory!!!!!!!!!! just remind me what they were doing there?????????????????????????????

  11. FINALLY……. This is what every person should have happen to them that hunts and kills animals like this… I don’t feel sorry for shit, not their spouse, kids, uncles, brothers, nephews… No one…I hope you felt every bone get crushed. If only this happened 99% of the time it would be amazing…. I hope a herd of elephants stomp through your funeral you piece of shit..

  12. lol you got what you deserved son. shame the ‘client’ who paid to kill an elephant didn’t get a tusk to the face too
