Control Cruel Special Interest Groups, Not the Wild Animals.

Letter from Rosemary Lowe to the Albuquerque Journal:
NM Game Dept. Killing Machine
“Mexican Wolves belong on New Mexico lands, but there are special interests within the hunting & livestock industries which have a long history of prejudice about this (& other) wonderful native species. It is time to bring back the Lobo, and give it the priority & protection it needs. These cruel special interest groups need controlling, not the wild291789_400428663360054_2105335387_n animals.
The livestock industry grazes on public lands, at taxpayer expense, denuding & damaging water resources, native grasses, while demanding that the government slaughter native wild animals including wolves, bears, coyotes, mountain lions, & other innocent wildlife: a mindless hatred of so-called “predators.” Many of these species are in decline, despite the “pseudo-science” misinformation from the Game Dept.& other anti-wildlife interests.
Native wild animals are facing further declines as Climate Change worsens, affecting the health of remaining ecosystems, but the Game Dept. continues its antiquated “management” schemes to appease their special interest buddies.
Based upon the anti-wildlife mentality of the Game Dept. it does not belong in the 21st century. It must be abolished, if wildlife is to survive at all.

  1. Great letter!! I hope it gets the attention it deserves and makes people angry. The greed and arrogance of the ranchers is mind boggling in the strangle hold they have on PUBLIC land and the wanton killing of the animals who actually belong on that land. It’s also inexcusable that government agencies cater to them and their hunting allies. But ranchers/hunting have claimed the territory for their own even since they arrived and decided that just about every animal was a menace or a pest that had to be trapped, poisoned, or shot into oblivion. The unfortunate cattle are no better off than their competitors, ending up just as dead for the ranchers’ profits.

What is so frustrating and unfair is that the animals can’t win. They don’t win against the weapons or in the legislatures or courts in any lasting way. It seems that justice belongs to fiction. In Dave Foreman’s novel, “The Outback Lobo Funeral Home” a couple of local environmentalists discover that a few Mexican wolves have returned to the Southwest. They are keeping the wolves’ presence secret to protect them. When a hunter/trapper discovered and kills the mother of new pups, he is sent to the “funeral home”–the bottom of a very deep mine shaft. At least one wolf got justice. Sigh . . .

  2. Thank you so much! I always appreciate reading your in-depth comments. It is nice to know there are some others who understand what is going on. Yet, too many wildlife groups still try to play the players’ game, adopting their jargon, and attempting to work with them. This Saturday the NM Game Dept. is having a “public hearing” on proposals to trap mountain lions and expand bear killing..There will be 2 mins. given per person. There will also be a “rally” around noon. It is quite a drive up there and it starts early, but am hoping to carpool if possible. I do not plan to say nice things to these bureaucratic killers, if I get to speak. Probably, the most effective thing will be the rally, rather than whatever folks say to the Commission. I’m sure the trappers, hunters and ranchers will be there. The link below seems to be the group heading this event.
