DECATUR — Hunting at the Nine Bar Ranch in Decatur has brought so many families so much joy. And now, for one family, unspeakable sadness.
“I can’t imagine anything worse than this,” says Decatur ISD superintendent Rod Townsend.
Peppered with pictures of a little boy wearing a cowboy hat and a grin, a GoFundMe page starts to tell the tragedy. Wise County Sheriff David Walker says Saturday morning, 55-year-old Jim Bob Little, who owns the popular ranch, was hunting with his 9-year-old grandson, Callen Little. Walker says Callen left the hunting blind, unbeknownst to his grandfather, and somehow ended up in the path of his grandfather’s shotgun. He died after being shot once in the chest.
“It’s a tragedy,” Walker says. “No one wants to see any kids hurt no matter what it is.”
Callen Little died after being shot once in the chest by his grandfather while hunting at the Nine Bar Ranch. Lauren Zakalik has the story.
Walker says investigators remain on the case, but all signs point to this being nothing more than a heartbreaking accident. Hunting, Walker says, is part of the fabric of so many families here.

“Accident”? NOT! Hunting is premeditated cold-blooded murder. Grampa just hit the wrong innocent animal. Consequences, humans. Consequences of your blood lust.
I agree completely with you.
I also agree…but there coul’ve been hope for the little boy…..he was just doing what grandpa did, unbeknown to him it’s evil.RIP little guy…I’m so sorry. And maybe grandpa will see how much “hunting” is evil.
I agree with you too. They will never get over this loss.Hunting is horrible.
Since “hunting is part of the fabric of so many families here,” according to this article, the kid would probably have continued the heinous practice into his adulthood. Better he is killed now, before he is responsible for the suffering and death of hundreds of innocent beings, than later, killed by another hunter as an adult, or fall out of a tree stand as an old man.
Whaat! Aside that these are hunters – that was someone’s kid.. A terrible tragedy and one I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Congratulating on the death of a kid just gives us a bad name and does nothing for our cause.
How about this… What if the young man had not died and had grown into adulthood as you have suggested, although it cannot be said for certain, and he had grown up to become a hunter as you have hypothesised, then based on the hypothetical it could be just as possible, due to his boyhood experiences, that he grows up and learns to detests hunting.
Heck, he could even become a vegetarian as this is just as hypothetical. As are your assumptions that you willing to imply in order to justify this young persons sad and untimely death as some kind of preKarmic episode.
This thinking is what drives the proponents of capital punishment, and it has been well documented that humans are a very adaptable animal which would indicate that while not all people change, some can and indeed do.
But there’s no improvement from death!
Yep, when murderers kill one of their own it can only be considered a blessing for all earthlings, especially for the many innocent individuals, whose lives, this young monster-in-training would have destroyed throughout his life. It is ironic that grandpa, a lover of death and misery, actually alleviated much suffering through his blunder.
Bad enough when adults go hunting. But exposing kids to the bloodshed and suffering and death and letting them think that is “fun” or “sporting” is inexcusable. Besides, there is no cosmic law that states people should be exempt from accidents, especially when guns are involved–including kids with guns.
I wish that it would be made illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to hunt. Of course, I really wish hunting would be illegal.
I agree …illegal to hunt anyone under 18 years of age. But better if there was NO HUNTING & they call it sport. grrrrrrrrr
sorry but you can’t cry when you train people to kill. sorry its nature of what you do
I agree with the above statements, Why would anyone take a 9 year old hunting and teach him animals lives mean nothing and that its ok to kill animals. They love their lives like we love ours
“Brought so many families so much joy” Are you fricking kidding me? Anyone that gets joy out of killing animals that just want to live their lives in peace, are sick, pathetic people! Normal families get joy out of going to movies together, playing board games together, family vacations, playing frisbee, going to the beach etc, get it?
How irresponsible to bring a child hunting? Too bad the grandfather wasn’t the one killed!
Stop fricking killing animals and maybe people won’t get killed as much by mistake.
Too bad but the child would have grown up just like his grandfather. Maybe he will rethink how fun hunting is. Killing defenseless animals should never be considered sport…
Guns belong in the hands of police or military. NO one else.
Absolutely disagree with you and the gun grab agenda you advocate.
Furthermore cops in the UK don’t use guns why do the cops in the US need them, so they can shoot innocent people in the back.
Guns are not the problem people are.
You cannot smoke or drink until you are an adult…should be the same with firearms and hunting.
“Hunting at the Nine Bar Ranch in Decatur has brought so many families so much joy.” Translated: “Killing…has brought so many families so much joy.” See anything wrong with this picture?
It is a tragedy for the family made worse that it is all so unnecessary – he should not be allowed anywhere near guns and had he been born into a different family where hunting was not considered acceptable fun it would never have happened. The family must live with guilt knowing their own child was destroyed by their attitude to animals rather the than me. Ann.
This is a tragic accident that the grandfather will have to live with for the rest of his life but it probably won’t stop him hunting and killing innocent animals just sick hunting should be banned don’t know how people get enjoyment out of killing animals for fun
I only feel sadness for the black boar that lay dead in the above pic, as well as other animals dead in hunting.
Loss of life is any case loss whether human or animal. Sad end. Little boy, RIP.
To hunt an innocent animal is unconscionable, to train a child to do the same should be illegal. It shouldn’t be a surprise that someone gets hurt in the process.

Unfortunately for the kid, this was karma coming to bite dear old grandpa in the butt. Hopefully this was traumatic enough to make the man not want to kill innocent living creatures for fun anymore.
Awww…..”conservation” strikes again! 🙂
Not a tragedy at all…..
