A grizzly bear that attacked and killed a hiker Friday in Yellowstone National Park will be euthanized, park officials said Monday. Authorities are also likely to euthanize two cubs in connection with the attack.
An adult female bear and at least one of her cubs were likely involved in the attack on 63-year-old Lance Crosby of Montana, park officials said in a press release. The bear’s paw measurements and a DNA sample are being examined to confirm the identity of the bear that mauled Crosby.
“The decision to euthanize a bear is one that we do not take lightly … Our decision is based on the totality of the circumstances in this unfortunate event,” Dan Wenk, park superintendent, said, in the statement.
The bear and the cub have since been captured while the other cub remains in the wild. The authorities will offer the cubs to a zoo or rehabilitation center and if no permanent home is found they will be euthanized, park spokeswoman Amy Bartlett said, according to the Associated Press.
“Fortunately, these kind of incidents don’t happen that often. We have 3.5 million people coming to Yellowstone each year and risking those lives is not a chance we’re willing to take,” Julena Campbell, another spokeswoman for the park, said, according to the Washington Post.
Crosby’s body, which was partially consumed, was found by a park ranger Friday near the Elephant Back Loop Trail in the park’s Lake Village area, after the man was reported missing by his co-workers Friday morning.
According to the National Park Service (NPS), about 674 to 839 grizzly bears dwell in the Greater Yellowstone region, which is one of the last remaining large ecosystems in the northern temperate zone.
The last death from a bear attack in the park was recorded in 2011, the first in 25 years, according to the NPS. There have been only eight fatalities since the first recorded bear attack in the park, in 1916, Campbell reportedly said.

Damn! Sorry about Mom. Maybe with the publicity surrounding this case a sanctuary will make the effort to help the cub(s). I sponsor grizzlies at two sanctuaries that offered to take them when the circumstances were bad. One of the bears would also have been euthanized if not accepted.
By the way, the first 12 comments on the article are in. The grizzlies are winning.
What are they trying to prove by doing this? I’m really at a loss to understand it. I’ll never return there again, their philosophy now is one of creating a money-making amusement park. I’m sorry this beautiful place is being ruined. This poor bear must be terrorized. There is unfortunately nothing that can be done because of the man’s death – he contributed to it himself. Making the bear pay is just a way of exerting human dominance – and I don’t want to be included in that segment of society that eats Cheetos and tries to feed them to the wildlife too.
It’s very unfortunate, but the man is guilty of contributory negligence. Killing a bear is not going to fix it, and where the season is on he wane, no other visitors are at risk. Ordinary people who shoot mountain lions in the suburbs don’t know any better; I’d expect a lot more from Yellowstone Park and its biologists and rangers.
People, please boycott this place. It’s now only appealing to the lowest common denominator who don’t listen to warnings, don’t pay attention to signage, walk up to wildlife for ridiculous selfies, and lean on their car horns when bison are crossing the road. They can’t even protect their own children from danger. I’m surprised they even look up from their dumb phones to even realize a bear or bison is there. This place is or should be about wildlife and wild beauty, not what it is descending into now.
Right. The few anti-bear comments I’ve seen say most people learn everything they know about wild animals from Disney, and so armed with that knowledge they get warm and fuzzy feelings for the grizzlies. Well, these parks ARE turning into Disney Land where a lot of people ignore warning signs and seem to think a selfie with a 2000-pound bison isn’t much different than one with Mickey Mouse. Accidents can happen even to those who aren’t so reckless because, well, wild animals are wild animals. Maybe people should have to sign a contract that they knowingly are going into area where big and scary predators are roaming because it happens to be their home. Visitors can choose to accept the risks or go to a zoo.
But the parks want the money and no fears or complaints about accidents/fatalities, so the “problem” wildlife are sent into eternity.
We’re supposedly are all about peace, love and forgiveness for our fellow man, so why can ‘t we extend it to other living things? We treat other living things like sh*t. I am so, so sorry that under the present Administration with the likes of Jewell and Ashe, probably delivering this decree from on high, our wild places are only about human recreation and running the national parks like a business. The sooner they fade into oblivion in 2016 the better for the environment it will be. A prime example is Jewell tweeting about Chincoteague horses, when she absolutely refuses to do anything about the killing of our wild horses in the West. This Administration has no concept of ecology at all.
Guess everything is being run like a business, including taking public land from wildlife and wild horses so the cattle men and extractors can have it. Going from Ken Salazar to Sally Jewell certainly hasn’t done wildlife any good.
He was bad, but in her own way she is worse. She really is just a figurehead, appearing at ribbon-cutting ceremonies and giving away the store to the Western governors. I cannot wait for 2016.
The core problem with all this is: The prevailing, inbred Humanist approach regarding wildlife, in all parks, refuges, forests, grasslands, & any other remaining wild areas. Adding to this “game management” Humanist philosophy, is the ever-exploding human population. There simply are far too many people going into these parks now.
I would love to go back to Yellowstone once more, but it is a zoo there now. Also, there is evidence that these poor Grizzly bears are more hungry than they used to be: the special pine nuts from certain forest areas are no longer available due to Climate Changes, and the decline of a favorite protein supply–salmon. All wild species are in severe danger everywhere because of increasing climate changes, and hunting, along with other destructive human causes.
John A. Livingston did not give a hopeful prognosis for these, & other large mammals. Just think, we on this blog are living witnesses to this end to evolution. It is really almost too much to fathom, isn’t it? My heart breaks for these non-humans every day, and I am sure yours does too. All we can do, is to try and save some wild places, and defend whomever in the wild, we can. I appreciate this honorable company of defenders of The Wild.
