Once upon a time, back in the 11th century, the recently discovered cross bow was considered a weapon of mass destruction. Pope Urban II banned its use in 1096. This was followed with a similar ban by Pope Innocent II. However, when it came to fighting the non-believers and the heretics, the popes relented, and the cross bow went to the Crusades. Kings then found the weapon just too good to give up.

Concerned groups are trying to stop the proliferation and possible destruction from accumulating nuclear weapons. Interestingly, the first UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was signed by 122 nations, none of which has one of its own.
In the meantime, peace activists want to “extend reason and dialog to the leader of North Korea,” a man not known principally for being reasonable in his persistent buildup and testing of weapons.
Human nature hasn’t changed much since the 11th century, but now our weapons are capable of destroying the planet. But judging from the continuing arms race, they are still just too good to give up.
