
An atheist was walking through the woods admiring the nature around him. “What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals,” he said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look, and suddenly saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him! He ran up the path as fast as he could. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was gaining on him. He looked over his shoulder again, and now the bear was even closer. In his haste, the man tripped on a root and fell to the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. A co-worker, also a veteran as am I, once told me that “there are no atheists in foxholes.” I agreed that while the religious were hunkered down and praying, the atheists were leading the charge and fighting for their country.
Today, we are seeing the result of a so-called christian administration and its policies toward wildlife and the environment, not to mention any non-US born person. We see its denial of not only the cause of, but the devastation caused by, global warming. More than likely, the bear wanted to pat the atheist on the back with its left fore-foot, and shake paw-to-hand with its right, and thank the atheist for working to stop trophy hunting, restore habitat, and treat other species as having ecological importance and a right to fill their niche. The self-proclaimed stewards of the Earth have failed miserably, and their excuse that the rapture is upon us and Earth and its sinners will be destroyed is lacking in any factual basis.
One might say I’ve lost my sense of humor. More likely, god took it from me as punishment for being an atheist.
