A 65-year-old man was charged with discharging a firearm inside Hamilton’s city limits after he allegedly shot a cat that had been live trapped at a church.
Lee Maxey was cited on the misdemeanor charge.
Hamilton police have been investigating a May 18 report that a domestic cat was caught in a trap at the Calvary Chapel Bitterroot Valley on North 4th Street and then euthanized.
The investigation by the police department’s animal control officer found that the church had an ongoing problem with feral cats and raccoons on its property. The cats had been defecating in a sand volleyball court that’s used by youth groups.
The church’s maintenance staff had been using live traps to capture the animals.
A neighbor’s domestic cat was caught in one of those traps. Lacking any obvious identification, the cat was apparently shot and killed.
