Nearly no other species’ population has been reduced in numbers as drastically as the red wolf. Once a thriving inhabitant of our nation’s Southeast, the current allowable range of this unique canine is now limited to North Carolina’s Alligator Wildlife Refuge and an adjacent Dare County bombing range. Hardly adequate for a North American native species who once called everything from Texas to Georgia and from Florida north to New Jersey its home range.

Additionally, the state of North Carolina just opened Hyde County to alligator hunting. No doubt the ruckus caused by over-eager good-ol’-boys out gator-huntin’ will drive some of newly transplanted red wolves right out of the area (conveniently into the gun-sights of neighboring land-owners who would then have the right to shoot the endangered wolves!

It seems that at a time when American citizens are allowed less of a say than ever in how the country is…
