WILDLIFE OFFICIALS WANT TO MOVE SOME MOUNTAIN GOATS FROM OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — AND KILL THE REST

The National Park Sevice and other agencies want to remove as many goats as possible from Olympic National Park and relocate them to the North Cascades. Under the plan, the remaining animals would be shot to eradicate them from the park.

  1. I attended the WDFW Commission meeting when this plan was presented to the Commission. One Commissioner, Holtzmiller, asked whether they needed volunteers. The presenter asked, “you mean to help release them in the North Cascades?” “No, the other.” You mean you want to help capture them?” “No.” After some schoolboy coyness, the Commissioner made it clear that he wanted to help hunt and kill the ones that couldn’t be captured and transported. Less than 3% of people in Washington are hunters, but that is representative of the type of commissioners we get to represent the public’s interest in wildlife.
