Deadly heat will continue across Japan through at least Thursday, following the hottest day on record in Japan.

The highest temperature ever recorded by the Japan Meteorological Agency was reported on Monday when Kumagaya reached 41.1 C (106 F).

Monday’s record narrowly clipped the previous all-time record high of 41.0 C (105.8 F) which was set in Ekawasaki in August 2013.

The Greater Tokyo Area also set an all-time high temperature on Monday as the mercury climbed to 40.8 C (105.4 F).

The recent heat wave, which has been ongoing for more than a week, has officially claimed the lives of more than 40 people while tens of thousands of people have been hospitalized for heat-related illnesses, according to the Japan Times.
