LANSING, Mich. – Michigan officials have approved a series of deer hunting regulations intended to slow the spread of chronic wasting disease.

Among them is an immediate ban on baiting and feeding deer in the 16-county area of southern and central Michigan identified as the CWD Management Zone.

A ban on baiting and feeding throughout the Lower Peninsula takes effect Jan. 31, 2019, with an exception for hunters with disabilities who meet specific requirements. Also imposed immediately was a statewide ban on natural deer urine-based lures and attractants not approved by the Archery Trade Association.

Details of other new rules are available online.

Chronic wasting disease is a fatal brain and nervous system illness found in deer, elk and moose. It’s been detected in 60 free-ranging deer in Michigan since May 2015.

  1. There should be an entire ban on baiting and feeding. A hunter that is so disabled that baiting and feeding is the only way he or she can get an animal should accept their limitations and try another form of ‘recreation’. For example, I know I will never be a professional athlete or a supermodel, and I’m ok with that. Hunters who are legally blind should not be hunting, but they are listed in the regs! In ancient times, hunting was for the most fit individuals. Hunting can never be made to be politically correct.
