(WWJ) It’s the final day of firearm deer hunting season — and some numbers are already coming in.

Ashley Autenrieth with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources say preliminary numbers show that deer deaths were up from last year – even though hunter numbers appear to be down.

About 300,000-350,000 deer are usually harvested per hunting season in Michigan. That puts its hunting season among the top five in the nation.

“We are looking at our deer check stations. Our numbers are up over 10 percent from last year. So that sometimes can indicate that, yes, our overall harvest is going to be up, but we won’t know that until May or June.”
