Injured Coyote and Altruistic Behavior by His Mate

Leg or paw injuries are very common in urban coyotes — I see them all the time. Most that I’ve seen are the result of dogs chasing them: legs get twisted, pulled, or even dislocated and broken as they try to get away in an urban environment.  I’ve also seen several instances of this resulting from coyote/coyote interactions.

Before I even knew that this coyote was injured, I watched his caring mate investigate the severity of the leg injury. Coyotes apparently investigate through their noses more than their eyes: she sniffed the leg intently. We’ve all seen our canine companions sniff each other to find out…

  1. I did, and I hope I still do. I used to hear them calling in the early mornings sometimes. But we’ve had a lot more development recently, and now all I hear is road noise in the early morning. 😦

God knows where they are now, or what has happened to them. I had foxes too.

One time I was on the telephone, and I heard a coyote yipping right by my back porch! Talk about thrilling. It was the ‘yip, yip, yip ai-ohhhh’ – talk about the perfect onomatopoeia! 🙂

  2. I have a beautiful red fox cross my back yard on occasion. But the neighbors go crazy at the thought and did when a coyote was sighted a few months ago. Why people cannot get informed instead of over-reacting is beyond me. No one ever said to go out and try to touch them, but having enough respect to let them live in peace is what is needed.

  3. Oh I know – I had a fox family and maybe still do, because from time to time I do see them, but not as often. I had one who seemed to have lost his or her tail, maybe by a car? But you could on occasion hear them in the woods behind my house, screaming. 🙂

I also just smh when neighbors want to kill deer because they browse on their plants! Wipe out a beautiful animal because of a plant that will grow back? My yard is not manicured, sprayed and fenced to within an inch of its life.
