I must respond to the misinformation concerning hunting repeated by Ray Patalon. The “if we don’t hunt, the deer will overpopulate and starve, etc.” arguments are nonsense.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission artificially inflates the herd by practicing game management rather than wildlife management. Game management is wholly in support of sport trophy hunting and focuses on having as many prime targets available as possible. Wildlife management works with nature to keep the balance of all species, flora and fauna.

The hunting seasons are specifically designed to balance hunters’ desire to kill with keeping the herd inflated. Rifle season, during which most deer are killed and wounded, occurs after the height of the breeding season and bucks are primarily targeted. The does are already bred and waiting to replenish the herd at that point.

Nature tried to reset this man-made imbalance by importing coyotes, but the Game Commission made it…
