There's an Elephant in the Room blog

Every day I see posts using fanciful estimates about the number of individuals our species slaughters each year. There are even suggestions (often circulated by those seeking to claim credit – and frequently, donations) that slaughter numbers are falling.
They are not falling. The slaughter of land-based species has actually increased by almost 700,000,000 since the last available statistical year. (Statistics by FAOSTAT)
The numbers above, which average at 2,374 individuals per second(!), do not include numerous other groups including:
- Marine creatures – estimated deaths 2.7 trillion annually;
- Male chicks killed by the egg industry – currently estimated at 7.4 to 8 billion annually;
- Bees in the honey industry;
- Silk worms;
- Dogs, cats and other species slaughtered in ‘backyards’ or slaughterhouses not contributing to FAOSTAT;
- Wildlife dying from loss of habitat and climate change caused by farming other species;
- Laboratory test subjects.
Not one of these deaths is necessary.

“To live vegan is to recognise that every individual, whatever their species, has the right to own their body and their life.”
This is why I can’t get on board with all the latest human complaints – metoo, etc.; if we can’t even recognize the right of other species to their own bodies and their own life! Human problems are endless, even with climate change, other life isn’t even mentioned – just humanity.
I don’t understand why humans need to kill other living things? Even when they do kill other living things, why can’t they be humane? Why take pleasure in ‘stopping a beating heart’ like that old bastard from Illinois in the news lately, who killed a sleeping lion? Can’t stand it. 😦
Humans DON’T “need” to.
But thankfully, there are a rare few out there who do care about other life – driving today, I was very pleased to see a gentleman stopped with his emergency flashers on to let two turkeys cross the road, and I’ve seen other do it for geese and turtles too.
