Bird dogs are common in South Dakota. Dogs used in hunting other game animals are not as common.

When may dogs be used for other than bird hunting?

“Dogs are specifically prohibited, with few exceptions, from hunting big game,” Kiel said, referring to South Dakota Codified Law. One exception is that a dog – leashed and under the control of a handler – may be used to track and retrieve any big game animal that is wounded or presumed dead.
