Letter: State’s human population growth continues

Dear Editor,

Your front page article last week warned that “State’s wolf population growth continues,” as though one of the the 126 wolves we might ever be lucky enough to ever see might constitute a menace to our way of life. Meanwhile, a quick headcount of humans could be more illustrative of potential problems. As of April 1, 2018, Washington’s population of people was estimated at 7,536,570. This represents an increase of 117,270 since last year.

Society seems to have conveniently forgotten what a realistic threat overpopulationrepresents for everything from endangered species’ habitat to the climate we’ve all long-since adapted.

And while I appreciated the nice photo of the snow-covered wolf that accompanied your article, the shot just above it of some of the 170 sheep being sheared (on just one farm) pretty much ruined it for me.

  1. The article about ‘eliminating poverty by 2030’ responding to the poacher death in Kruger National Park isn’t very realistic. By 2030, we are projected to be at 8,500, 000, 000 people (just look at the number of zeros) and continued loss of natural resources and pressure on other life on earth, not to mention climate change, both human-caused and natural.

  2. It’s the worst ad hominem fallacy ever, because it stops conversation cold – nobody wants to be thought of as a racist, an elitist, a Nazi, etc etc – but the fact remains that we are squeezing other life forms out of existence for the benefit of ourselves. 😦
