Lawmakers tabled a bill that could have lengthened the fall season, and shot down another that would have allowed spring hunting.

Maine’s bear hunters were hoping to bag big wins in the legislature this year, but their proposals for an overhaul of the state’s hunting rules will have to wait.

State legislators considered a change offered by a pro-hunting group that would have allowed state biologists to adjust the length of the season and the number of animals a hunter can kill.

Hunters hoped that would mean more opportunities to hunt bears, but a legislative committee decided in late May to hold the proposal over until the next session in January. 1. LOL, this made my day when I read it. And, I gotta say it again, I support the right to arm bears!!

And Maine’s wildlife advocates vowing to be the bane of their existence next season too.

  2. The bills were abominations. The Spring bear hunt bill was DOA. The Fish and Wildlife Department’s bill was a complete slap in the face to wildlife advocates. It was based on a corrupt “planning” process that came out of a group of pro-hunters. It was so out of touch with reality as to be almost laughable. IFW proposed to allow the killing of more bears while extending the bear feeding/training season that would feed and train more bears just to be killed by hunters and trappers. It’s not as bad in Maine as it is in Wisconsin, but if the State of Maine has its way, it will be.

    • Interestingly enough, the legislator who led the effort to table the bill to feed and kill more bears is a sporting camp owner and a hunting guide. He is concerned that the backlash from the bill will negatively impact bear hunting and of course, his business.
