Pressure is growing to eliminate fur farming after 14 EU member states banned the farming of mink and other wild animals.
The Prohibition of Fur Farming Bill will come before the Dáil on the 3 and 4 of July.
Speaking at a media conference today, Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger, described fur farming as a “cruel and ailing” industry.
She said: “The Taoiseach should direct the Minister for Agriculture to ban the cruel caging of wild mink by ministerial order, as was done with the ban on wild animals in circuses two years ago.”
Figures show the fur trade in Ireland has decreased in recent years.
