The current coronavirus pandemic is at the forefront of people’s minds at the moment; with about 30 million people testing positive around the world and around one million deaths.

Just over a century ago, as men returned from fighting in the First World War they carried with them a particularly virulent form of flu, known as Spanish Flu. It is estimated that, worldwide, 500 million people (a third of the, then, world population) caught it and up to 70 million people died – with India alone suffering 16 million deaths, and the USA suffering 675,000 deaths. In the UK it is estimated that 250,000 people died.

A comparable death rate has not been observed during any of the known flu seasons or pandemics that have occurred either prior to or following the 1918 pandemic, including coronavirus. It was the most recent severe pandemic historically…
