It’s hard not to draw parallels between the United States’s botched responses to coronavirus and climate change. Both are pressing threats to the wellbeing of the general public that were largely ignored by those in power until the last possible minute. But there is more that connects the two than the government’s disastrous mismanagement. Anew study published last weekby the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) found that pandemics and other widespread diseases have become more common due to human activity that has destroyed parts of the natural world.
