A Fort Wayne, Indiana, man accused of accidentally shooting and killing his stepson will proceed to his plea hearing date.

John Varndell Jr., 40, appeared before St. Clair County Circuit Court Judge Michael West for a pre-trial hearing Monday.

St. Clair County Assistant Prosecutor Joshua Sparling asked West to schedule a final plea hearingand jury trial date for Varndell. West agreed to do so, however did not set a dates during the hearing.

Varndell is charged with involuntary manslaughter, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, two felony firearms second offense charges and a habitual fourth violent offender.

Due to the habitual offender enhancement, he faces a minimum sentence of 25 years in prisonand a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted.

Varndellwas released from parole in January for a felony firearms charge.
