Members of a hunt will break centuries of tradition by not meeting during the festive period this year.

The Cottesmore Hunthas cancelled its Boxing Day meet in Cutts Close, Oakham, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The meet, which has been taking place annually for 354 years, attracts hundreds of supporters who gather to watch huntsmen set off on a trail hunt.https://399a7078785d96179a5cbddc319fa699.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html

The legal method of ‘hunting’ with hounds, involves a fox-scented trail being laid by a horserider and the hounds then following the trail through the countryside.

“Because of Covid we can’t have 500 people gathering in Oakham,” said Clare Bell, Cottesmore Hunt secretary.

“It’s really sad as it is an important part of a lot of people’s Christmas but traditions for everybody this year are going to be different.”
