Clay Township’s chief of police saidthe manner in which John Varndell Jr. and others were hunting on the night 11-year-old Zachary Rock was killed was unsafe.
“If I was making a video on what notto do when youwent into the woods, this would have fit the bill perfectly,” said Clay Township Police Chief Michael Koach, who also teaches hunter safety courses to the public.
Varndell was inthe second day of a trial Wednesday for allegedly shooting and killing Zachary, his stepson, in a hunting incident on Sept. 13 in Clay Township. Varndell, Zachary and five other relatives wentout at dusk to searchfor a deer that had been injured earlier when the shooting occurred, witnesses have said.
