Changes are afoot for the upcoming hunting seasons within the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, including a new deer lottery system. As Refuge Manager Virginia Rettig explained, “During our hunt program reevaluation a few years ago, and as we transitioned to a refuge hunting permitting system, it made more sense for the refuge to run the lottery rather than the state.”

Also this year, for the first time, the refuge will be open for all state deer seasons to include fall, permit and winter bow; permit muzzleloader; permit shotgun; and six-day firearm. To hunt deer on the refuge, one must apply for the lottery for each season.
