SCHUYLER — A hunter in Herkimer County was fined more than $1,000 after claiming he wasn’t trespassing as long as he was standing under power lines, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Authorities said the hunter, whose identity was not released, was found shooting deer on
private property in Schuyler on Dec. 4.
Authorities interviewed the hunter and he told them that if he was standing under power lines that meant he was within a public right-of-way, even on private property.
The hunter claimed he’d hunted under similar right-of-ways for years, authorities said. When questioned further, officials said the hunter admitting to knowing he was wrong.
DEC officials said the hunter had also already filed his regular season antlered tag the week prior.
The hunter went to Schuyler Town Court and pleaded guilty to one count each of trespass, illegally taking a white-tailed…
