Officials are warning Montanans to keep themselves and their pets away from dead birds, as a bird flu outbreak now in its second year starts to infect more mammals.

In Montana,close to 82,500 domestic birds have been culledfrom the ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI, since the state saw its first case in a poultry flock last April.

  1. I think it’s time for officials to stop calling this a bird flu. We have reached the point, IMO, where our population is so great and so many animals are raised for human consumption that we no longer can control disease associated with it. I’m actually amazed that it hasn’t happened sooner, or that these facilities can be kept sanitary.

    I hope that it is setting off alarm bells. Only for ourselves though, probably. 😦
