Dear Gail, The fight continues to stop the horrifying bloodsport of penned dog hunting in Ontario—where hunters send dogs after caged coyotes, foxes, and rabbits. Today, Animal Justice and Coyote Watch Canada filed an application for review of penned dog hunting under Ontario’s Environmental Bill of Rights—a cornerstone law that gives citizens the right to request a review when a law or policy needs to be improved to protect the environment. This fall, Ontario bowed down to dog hunting extremists and reversed a ban on new dog hunting pens, which had been in place since 1997. The province is now allowing hunters to open up new violent “train and trial” areas. Ontario is the only Canadian province where this sickening practice is legal, and it’s been banned in most US states. We’re requesting the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to review and revoke the new regulations, and to close down all existing penned dog hunting areas. These pens directly conflict with Ontario’s animal welfare legislation and the federal Criminal Code, which both prohibit organized animal fighting—something that frequently occurs in these pens.Penned dog hunting also poses a serious public health risk, due to a tapeworm found in wild coyote populations that can spread to dogs and humans. The parasite often goes undetected for years in humans and can cause fatal tumors. Last year, Animal Justice released a shocking investigation from a dog hunting pen, showing terrified coyotes running for their lives with nowhere to escape, and hunters threatening violence toward dogs who aren’t aggressive enough. We caught hunters admitting on camera that dogs frequently maul and kill the captive wild animals they use as bait—contrary to what hunters told lawmakers. We can’t let this horrifying practice continue. Coyotes, foxes, and rabbits need protection from this violent bloodsport! Please join us in calling on the Ontario government to NOT issue new penned dog hunting licenses, and to close the last remaining dog hunting pens in the province.Stop Penned Dog Hunting NowThank you for speaking up for wildlife! We’ll keep you updated on the next steps in our fight to stop the hunts. In gratitude, Kaitlyn Mitchell Director of Legal Advocacy |
