Breaking News: Obama Administration Strips Wolf Protections Across Most of Lower 48 States

“This is like kicking a patient out of the hospital when they’re still attached to life-support,” said Noah Greenwald, endangered species director with the Center for Biological Diversity. “Wolves cling to a sliver of their historic habitat in the lower 48 and now the Obama administration wants to arbitrarily declare victory and move on.

In a move questioned by some of the world’s leading wolf researchers, the Obama administration announced plans today to prematurely strip Endangered Species Act protections from gray wolves across most of the lower 48 states, abruptly ending one of America’s most important species recovery programs. The proposal concludes that wolf protection in the continental United States, in place since 1978, is no longer needed, even though there are fledgling populations in places like the Pacific Northwest whose survival hinges on continued federal protection.

  1. A clueless, urban President on wilderness and wildlife and Sally Jewell: New Secretary of Interior: I have skeptical, strong doubts, about her, which she is confirming along with USFWS regarding the wolf and wildlife. She is a petroleum engineer and a banker and business executive. To me means further trouble for wilderness, I think further exploitation, multi-use, meaning further encroachment under the guise of cooperation. I see nothing about wilderness here except the sale of equipment for outdoor recreation. So, she is likely to be fine for outdoor recreation but not necessarily for wilderness or wildlife. I have met many people who like to hike, camp, mountain bike, rock and mountain climb, ski, kayak, etc., who are clueless and could care less about wildlife and wildlife habitat, and even complain about it interfering with their activities. Obama still seems the clueless President with regard to public lands, wilderness, wildlife, deferring it to others. But she will doubtfully, but maybe, be better than rancher Salazar, but as yet no proof. The wolf issue is being deferred to the usual anti-wolf elements, to state control and persecution by traditional anti-predator and anti-wolf groups, and to state political control of a species when all endangered or threatened or persecuted species should remain in federal control and strong oversight. I do understand that Obama does not want to deal with another political hot potato, but democrats are missing an opportunity here to make political hay on an issue the American people would likely support.

  2. Look at the list of anti-wolf groups wanting to have the wolf de-listed in the lower 48 and manage wolves on a state by state basis, which in effect puts the fate of the wolf in traditional wolf hating, marginalizing hands so that ungulates like elk can be farmed; and these groups are still using three lies and myths that have no basis in fact, science or logic: (1) Wolves are significantly depredating cattle; (2) Wolves are depredating elk; (3) the wolf is sufficiently recovered in the lower 48 so can be turned over to state management because they are best managed at the state level. Counter points: (1) Wolves are not significantly depredating cattle, only .002% in MT in the past few years with only 67 of 2.6 million last year (2012); (2) Elk numbers are up in all states, 37% in Montana since wolf re-introduction (1995), and Wyoming has had 10 years in a row of record elk harvest; (3) Wolves are not best managed at the state level because of the political nature of wolf management at the state by state level and the liaison of wildlife agencies with hunter groups and ranchers.

If successful as an intervener, RMEF will join the Hunter Conservation Coalition group comprised of Safari Club International, National Rifle Association, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation, Wisconsin Bowhunters Association, Upper Peninsula Bear Houndsmen Association, Michigan United Conservation Clubs, and the Michigan Hunting Dog Federation.”

    • All good points Roger……we’ve talked about all the science that dispels all the myths and misinformation……..Speaking of RMEF……I’ve got this link….ted Williams is hardly a wolfaboo or a “bunny hugger”…. http://www.flyrodreel.com/blogs/tedwilliams/2012/August/rocky-mountain-foundation Why does anyone even pay any attention to the canned hunters in SCI? We should ask them how lion conservation is going in South Africa? semi tame hand fed lions bred for the bullet to be booked for a “hunt” (all laugh here) and then the lion bone is sold to the Chinese….everyone wins but the lion!!!!!SCI told us that canned lions would protect the wild lion population….that hasn’t happened now has it- it’s a free for all…need that wild lion blood to keep the gene pool fresh in the captive population…….and- if a wealthy SLOB trophy hunter has a canned lion…why not have a wild lion side by side in the trophy room….Dan Ashe is bogus…….It will come out- he is a country clubber- fits in well with the don Peay SFW type crowd- those fake conservationists…..Read this last week. http://www.eenews.net/stories/1059982240 “state wildlife agencies are best equipped to prevent the animals from preying on livestock or big game species like elk and moose…..That last part- sounds like something a trophy hunter would say…..So now- people are going to start telling us what food wolves are entitled to eat? if you are a wolf hater…and wolves only ate Chinese food- you would still bit^& that wolves wasted too many napkins right? There is no pleasing these people- they are rabid.

  3. This angers me quite a lot, for wolves were on an endangered species list. Why they were taken off that list I don’t understand. Now the situation has gotten so bad and so many wolves, young and old; are losing their lives by so many gun happy, killing happy people! Just terrible!

  4. what are we humans going to do when ALL the animals in the world are gone. I believe we will not exist anymore. then WE will be the hunted and killed, leave all the laws alone that protect animals,of all kind. they help our environment. make new laws to STOP this stupidity, and self suicide.

  5. We need to show the congress people that what they have done is against the voters wishes !!!
What we can do is find out which Congressman voted to let this happen and vote against them when election day is here again. Send a letter to your Congressman letting him know how disappointed you are in him. The Wolf is a Great Animal in our world and should be looked upon as a Great Gift from God. Shame on you congresspeople!!! Larry “Indian Boy” Grazier

  6. I have stopped supporting the dems and mr obama. I have removed myself from them. I am an independent now. There are 2 things that get politicians attention. 1 is $$$, the other is your VOTE. I have no $$$ so I will take my vote away and try to take as many people with me as I can. We as a people can protect ourselves we can group together and stand up and fight. Animals cannot, they need us to stand up for them. If this admin cannot protect animals and the environment. Then I suggest we work hard to find ones that can.

    • I agree John. Obama could care less. Remember that Dan Ashe has his job as the head of the USFWS after a hold was taken off by SEN John Bourasso of Wyoming pending a meeting between then boss Ken Salazar and GOV matt mead of Wyoming……Quid pro quo…..I’ll give you your man ASHE as head of the USFWS but I want the Wyoming Wolf Management Plan approved…..It was like magic…the FEDS approving a plan to exterminate wolves in 85% of the State and bottleneck the remaining wolves into one small corner of the State…( subject to hunting of course if they leave the Yellowstone Park Boundary) collared wolves…who cares…shoot em….. These are some of Ashe’s decisions lately…..first time in 30 years….http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/04/17/us-allows-endangered-rhino-trophy#.UXk_VnwFYDA.facebook

    • Obama f’ed it bad! He really is an urban loser with no sense of history of wilderness in his bones .. No sense of legacy like Teddy Roosevelt this guy wouldn’t know wilderness if it came up and kissed him!
A spying and now lying son of a gun with oil and blood dripping from his hands ..Take America’s killing spree out on the wolves? Because we can’t pass gun background checks .. Go let all the crazies let out a little steam on intelligent beings with fur? He is a huge sell out and I am beyond despair with his inane decision!
I will be protesting until they drag me away ! Lets take the wolves out of the red states and give them political asylum !
      California will work!
      Wolf national park!
Lets get started and save our wildlife and the violence perpetuated on them!
Terrible outcome to an already dreadful decision .. Total lack of scientific and biological understanding! Clueless Harvard grad! They must not teach science?

  7. This is truly shocking. I can say that even in South Africa with far less resources than the US has we are not treating our wildlife so badly. President Obama as a caring father should know better than to allow this backward and barbaric evil to take place. Shame on you Obama. What do you ;plan to leave in the country for your daughters? This is utterly shameful and hateful.

  8. What I’m never hearing is that it’s not only about managing to keep wolves from extinction. These animals are important to our environment, and were they thrive the ecosystem comes back into balance for many animals and plants, and the environment in general. Why are people who can’t understand that simple fact making these decisions???!!!

  9. Why don’t you kill me and be done with it. My last name is wolf. Am I on your chopping block? I might as well be. I’ll go to my grave loving and defending wolves and their rights. This is WRONG. They have done nothing to deserve this. We still have research and work left to do. They have so much to teach us. Please reconsider. Let them live in peace.

  10. Has the world and its leaders gone mad?
We take away these creatures land and build and build and we can’t even have the common courtesy to make sure these babies are cared for and protected! I am disgusted to call my self human:(

  11. I believe that the real reason that they are being taken off the Endangered Species List is fueled by Big Oil’s interest to proceed with all of the pipelines, mines & fracking that they are trying to push through… There is no real scientific proof that they should be removed from that list… You see, as long as the wolves are considered endangered their habitat & their territory cannot be infringed upon… This means that our indigenous people once again will be put at the mercy of this careless attitude of our government because many of these grossly polluting projects will infringe on Native American lands that are supposed to be protected by treaties… I did vote for Obama, but when something like this infringes on the rights of the poorest people in our land & all that they hold sacred I am ashamed that I voted at all… This is truly a black mark on our country because it is all about money…

    • You’re absolutely right. It’s all about Big Oil wanting the land and it’s about money. We humans are going to gut the earth and kill every species on it while squeezing out every last drop of filthy oil. I voted for Obama because Romney was even worse, but he has proven himself to be no different than the repubs who hate him so much. I’m on the downslope of life now and I’m glad. I’m sick of watching every good thing in the world be destroyed by greed and ignorance. I’m sick about it. Oh, I’ll keep fighting because it’s my nature, but I’m utterly sick at heart.

  12. Well it looks as if the states want a fight to the death. Let’s give it to them. “Conditions of war exist where reason, persuasion, and dialog fail. In order to stop violence and terrible tragedy, one has to do a lot more than chanting for peace” -Dr. Steven Best.

  13. Let’s form one huge group and fight together for wolves, wild horses, the environment, our democracy and everything else they are destroying in front of our eyes. Since we don’t have the kind of money they do we need sheer numbers and public support. There has to be a way!

  14. Not surprised that the Americas are still killing wolves, they are still living in ”gone by times;” plus they think its their ”Birth Right” too killed and skin wolves, deers and bear. The old generation of America are teaching the young, its the right thing too..!!

  15. sickening. just cant believe it. poor poor animal.s they ar beautful. The Ameican Indians had all taken from them in the wars, and now MAN is taking even MORE , for greed and money. The animals…… I cant believe how President Obama has allowed this. heartbreakjng, has nobody got any morals, or compassion in this world or in their minds?

  16. Don’t fool your voters and the rest of the world!
You kill more of your alleged important ecologically animals during one single oversea transport than a wolfmother in twenty years!!!!

Tell your ranchers to build fences, keep their cattles away from public land and protect them from dying on ships and in trucks in the name of globalization and tell your so-called hunters they are nothing else but cowardly little examples for Americans with either too much inferiority complexes or pathological pleasure in killing. The first-mentioned should be sent to the therapist and the others to jail.

And hey, the world doesn’t need more than half of the producted meat, because it ends up in the dustbins and on the streets of our modern „civilized“ human society, anyway!

Representives of a country with so rare extant nature and wildlife should be ashamed of the fact that they need to be reminded of the importance and need to protect their rare and precious heritage from human perversion, imbecility and greed and safe it for future generations !

I don’t think that being part of the environmental degradation and the extinction of wildlife in the United States is something you will tell your grandchildren with pride.

Time’s running out even for the United States; if you don’t act immediately and keep on supporting big corporations, “hunters” and ranchers you and your people will have to join the Europeans, Africans and Asians watching real nature on TV and wildlife in small cages and aquariums.

Surely, NOTHING YOU COULD BE PROUD OF !

  17. don’t keep murdering the wolves or any other animal as it not human act to do!
what harm have they done to you or anyone. But you still like to kill slaughter them
are you human or or you evil monsters
