4 wolves killed after livestock deaths

Kill order remains in place for wolves near Silver Creek

Four wolves—one near Carey and three in the Sawtooth Valley—have been killed in recent weeks due to depredation on cattle and sheep. All were killed by Idaho Wildlife Services on private land.

According to the agency’s director, Todd Grimm, a female wolf was trapped and killed May 29 on the Flat Top Ranch following a complaint by ranch owner John Peavey that he had lost more than two dozen lambs and ewes. Peavey said he protects the bands with people, spotlights and guard dogs, but he was criticized by wolf advocates for allowing his ewes to give birth on the range rather than in sheds.

Grimm said the wolf had had pups this spring, but was not lactating at the time she was trapped and killed.

“Either the pups were no longer nursing or they had already died,” he said.

Grimm said three male wolves were trapped and killed on Decker Flat, on the west side of the Sawtooth Valley near Obsidian, on May 30 and 31 and June 10. He said the wolves were killed upon direction from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, as is the case in all the lethal actions taken by Wildlife Services, an agency under the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He said the order came following the death of a calf on May 28.

Grimm said two of the wolves were yearlings and were wearing radio collars placed on them by the Department of Fish and Game. He said Wildlife Services sometimes refrains from killing wolves with collars, depending on their value to scientists studying them.

“In this case, we didn’t realize the wolves were radio-collared until after the fact,” he said.

Grimm said he did not know of any nonlethal deterrent actions taken before the kill order was issued, a situation criticized by pro-wolf activists. When requested, the Idaho Wolf Project, organized by nonprofit Defenders of Wildlife, provides ranchers with volunteer night guards, portable fencing, air horns and other deterrent methods.

“Here we have people willing to help with proven nonlethal methods and we’re spending taxpayer dollars to kill wolves,” said Lynne Stone, director of the Boulder-White Clouds Council.

But Grimm said nonlethal deterrents don’t work well with cattle, which stay much more spread out at night than do sheep.

He said the three wolf kills ended the control order in the Sawtooth Valley.

Grimm said a kill order has also been issued for two wolves in the Silver Creek area south of Bellevue after a calf was confirmed to have been killed there on June 8. However, he said, “the wolves haven’t shown back up, so I don’t know if we’ll be able to do anything there.”

  1. These sociopaths just can’t get enough killing in their sorry empty sick lives. What a state is it that harbors and protects these sorts of evil beings. Lets face it–they continue to operate because ELECTED officials support the behavior. Is this state an off-shoot of Syria?

    • They operate because they can. They can because it isn’t at the state level, the sickness is all the way to the top, and then some. It started as NAFTA, sort of morphed into SPP under BUSH, and according to wikipedia, now Obama has adopted this new world order mindset as of 2011. Look it up for yourself. The wolves are not important to these people. Neither is the ESA, which they hate because they see it as in the way of progress of their Super corridors. These are giant 12 lane highways, mostly for international commerce. Alongside giant pipelines for oil, gas and water. Big powerlines, too. They divide up the continent, rename areas, for example, NH, VT, ME, NS and NB are Atlantica. And if you didn’t notice, NS and NB are not States, they are Canadian Provinces!

As far as I can figure, wolves are only the test subjects for the whole ESA?

      • Up to a point, I agree with yu Melody, but this crapp occurs in the states who’s bullshit is over-represented by the archaic electoral system, that gives uneducated, psychopathic individual states in their minority status to control the country. The educated, under-represented majority is totally opposed to the bullshit–including Obama’s, being gamed by the archaic electoral system. What’s effing next?? Another rioting in the streets, civic uprising vis a vis Vietnam Nam era? This is going to take something VERY big to change, way bigger than elections, cutesy
        compromises bullshit!

  2. “Grimm said two of the wolves were yearlings and were wearing radio collars placed on them by the Department of Fish and Game. He said Wildlife Services sometimes refrains from killing wolves with collars, depending on their value to scientists studying them.”

How about refraining from killing wolves because they have their own intrinsic value, you bunch of fecking sociopaths.

  3. At some point, if we want to be effective, we need to actually spell the words–NS? NB? We all need to be speaking the same language . We aren’t all living in the same place or of the same historical experience. Better to over educate than leave to much to guess. It doesn’t help our real purpose. Any specifics can more than help the whole cause, even if redundant.

    • Meegwetch, thank you, for reminding me! We get used to the alphabet soup letters because it is faster and there is much to do! But I will explain. Under this new world order, because of NAFTA…North AmericanFree Trade Agreement, which started up under Clinton, much to the dismay of Ralph Nader, who sounded the warning far and wide, but the people didn’t get it…and refinded under Bush, who tried to rename it SPP, we have free trade agreements with Mexico and Canada. But now these multi- national corporate enities hav personhood. They have rights like we humans do. To try to sue them is prohibitively expensive and only happens if our gov’t agrees that they will take the case. The deck is totally stacked. And not in our favor. Obama was against it when he ran for office. Now he can’t run again because of term limits. So he has nothing to lose and, and everythjng to gain from these corporations.
NS is Nova Scotia, NB is New Brunswick, Canada. Those are to be joined with Northern New England to form Atlantica under this plan. It’s all about exploitation of natural resourses by these multinationals like Nestle. They want to mine our pristine aquafers to the last drop. They are doing that now. Read “Who’s water is it anyway?” “Bottlemania” etc. And go on celdf.org and read the newsletters. You will also get info to stop fracking.
If your skin isn’t crawling yet it will be once you wrap your mind around this. We will be reduced to impoverished serfdom. Machines do their work for them once the infrastructures are completed. Huge gas, oil and water pipelines, powerlines and 12 lane toll roads. Think Keystone XL. Wolve s being delisted is just the start. All Endangered Species are in the way if their Super Corridors. Overlay the map The Sierra Club released with known wolf habitat. Therein, appears to be the problem. The wildlife service is justa means to the end. I wouldn’t be surprised if the rich trophy hunters are the same sociopaths as the high ranking Corporate officers involved in the pipeline projects. Corporate CEO’s profile the same as sociopaths, it’s just how they use their skill set that makes the difference. The local sicko’s are just being used to kill animals in the path of progress. Willing pawns in the game. I once lived in the Rockies, I KNOW THE MENTALITY!

      • Great points, especially: “Huge gas, oil and water pipelines, powerlines and 12 lane toll roads. Think Keystone XL. Wolve s being delisted is just the start. All Endangered Species are in the way if their Super Corridors. Overlay the map The Sierra Club released with known wolf habitat. Therein, appears to be the problem. 4. Three wolves for a cheeseburger?? Again, WILDLIFE SERVICES. Maybe it was Jamie Olson who set the traps and pulled the trigger. I hate these people so passionately. They fly in the face of all that is good and decent.
melindash, I think there are many thousands who would riot in the streets, but unlike the Vietnam era where you might spend a night in the clinker, this time you risk “rubber” bullets….toxins sprayed in your open eyes….and being labeled a “terrorist”, facing 10 years in jail.

Fuck John Peavey AND his cows.

    • Exactly, Gail. They built those supermax prisons with us in mind. And those ‘protest areas’ that are no where near the event you are protesting, or the press. All part of the New World Order! This is why they stopped teaching civics in schools.

      • Well, that’s certainly a chilling thought, Melody. I have a gut feeling that a few of the comments on this blog topic are spot on.
I remember the very first time I read about a protest group being directed to an area several miles away from where W Bush was going to appear. Several MILES? I guess that’s one way to negate a protest, huh? Am I wrong, but I believe that trend began with G.W.Bush: “If you’re not with us, you’re against us”. Seems to have carried through to the current administration to some degree. He was a model puppet.

  5. Just a side note: There is no longer a genetically viable gene pool of wolves in Yellowstone. This should be addressed as it is federal, not state land. The ESA covers States… one could make the argument that these wolves belong to the American people and arebeing grossly mismanaged. They suffer with mange mites and are stressed by hunting, trapping and loss of alpha family members. That recently lactating wolf’s pups probably starved to death when she was shot to death? Wolves don’t really become self-sufficient until they are over a year old. They only nurse for about 6 weeks. A 6 week old wolf pup will starve unless it is adopted by another female and fed. Most states won’t let a puppy leave a breeder until the age of 8 weeks. I’m pretty sure there is some recourse in this case? Perhaps enough to have large 50 acre wolf pack enclosures per pack? It beats watching helplessly as they are slaughtered, one by one! And this would allow for treatment by a vet to rid them of parasites. And I bet there is enough fence in gov’t surplus to do it for free! Once healthy, potential unrelated mates could be introduced to stop inbreeding.
But what do I know? I am just an artist/musician/wolf rescuer. I know this much: extinction is forever!

  6. For someone who said, “fuck John Peavey AND his cows”?…you might want to rethink that one. “AND his customers”…please. Anyways, “fucking” is far too good for them.

Why are the cows there to be used as an excuse to kill wolves? Because millions of people eat burgers, steaks, etc. To blame the cows is extremely shortsighted and cruel.

People who eat meat and protest the killing of wolves need to wise up and go vegan or at least permanently stop eating cows for a start.

      • Jim, when I read what you wrote, I got a line drawing in my mind of a big, toxic-looking rancher with flabby, fat hanging over his jeans, walking out of a diner. Behind, on the counter is a plate with a potato chip bag and a fork on it. On the tines of the fork are photos pierced through of a cow, a sheep, a pig and a wolf. They are all the victims. Caption R.I.P. Perhaps you can or others can give me more ideas or comments on if it would be an effective political cartoon? Also if you think it might make people think about what they eat? I have been thinking of taking up cartooning again, but this time doing a book of political commentary cartoons. I want to do something that will educate people and help the creatures at the same time. And maybe even do some funny stuff, too?

      • No, not the cows’ fault at all. I think I became incensed after reading that Peavey was a politician as well as a rancher and wrote without thinking it through.

    • Frustrating just begins to cover all the ranges of emotions! Poor wolves just want to be wolves.
Leaving sheep and cows to give birth on the open range is not just bad management, it is cruelty to those animals and the wolves, who, get killed and may have had nothing to do with it! Why don’t they just have to capture rather than kill the wolves, and put them in a wolf-friendly area?
I think there are some things that can happen if someone with an existing irs 501(c)3 and a wolf rescue, can lease some land forthe wolves and fence it properly. People can and will argue over the wellbeing of the wolves and human contact. Bottom line is they would be alive and healthy wolves, not dead wolves and dead pups. Yes, they will live their lives with humans forever, but good humans who feed and vet them. Material to fence property can be had in gov’t auctions, private auctions, from realtors who want a dog enclosure gone from a client’s property, usually with a dog house too, good for isol ation pens or observation/vetting. Parts andpieces come up on craigslist dirt cheap or free.
I am saying this because I think everyone who cares and has the ability/knowledge/wolf experience/health to do this should start getting geared up before hunting season. Different states have different rules.
Make friends with game wardens, they can bring you wolves that have been rescued and road killed prey to feed them. Local wolf rescues can give you local info to get started, it varies by town. Check your state’s website. Town website etc. Do something. Even if it is just volunteering. The worst thing is to feel helpless! Oh…ps:
Transport between states requires a permit.

  7. Melody, when I think of the hypocrisy of these ranchers, I imagine a triptych portraying
    1) a rancher (as you describe) land baron standing among his pregnant cattle or sheep.
    2) Big tears spilling from his eyes over a dead calf or lamb with the tag “it’s those damn wolves!!” (with raised fist, rifle, etc).
    3) Big smile on his face as he watches the animals being loaded onto trucks and heading for the slaughterhouse (maybe a balloon over his head showing $$$).

    • Yes, Gail, thanks, I think at least some folks will get that for which we intend? Some get enlightened earlier than others, some never have a clue. If I can grease the wheels of enlightenment, and create a better life for animals, I will. But not in cartoon form for a couple of days as I was ‘wounded in action’ this morning by a dog I rescued who bites women. Loves men but really hates human and dog females. She is tiny and growls like a terrier. The only other bite I’ve had that broke the skin was a rat terrier and he got me real bad, right through my thumb and out the other side nail and all. I take what I can for rescues but if I have only one slot open, I will take a wolf over these terrier mixes, wolves, I understand, I’m obviously not on the rat terrior brainwave reception list. 🙂 I will be ok. Just can’t sketch for a few days.
I’m glad you apperciate some of the connections I wrote about. You brought up the force and penalty level allowed now. Most people don’t know how a police state works in the beginning because schools don’t put a premium on history and civics anymore. I’m not saying that facism is a foregone conclusion yet but I will say it’s a big revolving door in D.C. between appointed positions and the corporate world and around and around it goes. It isn’t nice but it’s reality. I’ve heard it’s just as bad in Canada. You are correct, it started mostly under ‘W’, but Clinton gave them NAFTA. I think he gave them that golden goose’s egg and the instructions as to care and feeding?
