HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Environmentalists upset with a federal proposal to remove protections for wolves across most of the U.S. have posted a manual on how to disrupt wolf hunts and sabotage traps.
The 12-page manual published online Monday by Earth First! tells would-be saboteurs that Internet activism alone can leave activists with an empty feeling, so “why not try direct action?”
The manual instructs how to find traps and take them out by destroying or hiding them. It also instructs how to release a trapped wolf, noting that doing so is very dangerous, and suggests forming blockades where wolf permits are sold and walking ahead of hunters with air horns.
Earth First! Media spokesman Grayson Flory said his organization published the manual written by a group calling themselves the “Redneck Wolf Lovin’ Brigade.” The impetus was the Obama administration’s announcement in June that it plans to end Endangered Species Act protections for almost all wolves in the United States, he said.
“We don’t believe something being illegal automatically makes it right or wrong,” Flory said. “The wolf hunt manual that we’re redistributing is only about protecting life, not killing it. We’re completely against the harming of living things.”
[Oh really, that’s a welcome switch from their statement in the manual that, “We are hunters and proud of it…feral hogs beware.”]
Wolf hunts already are allowed in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Minnesota. A hunt is scheduled for this fall in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesman Ron Aasheim said the state’s wolf hunting policy was a public process that deserved respect.
“This shows you the extremes people are willing to go to in making their points and affecting public policy,” Aasheim said. “But if something comes to pass and people do break the law, they will be prosecuted.”
Montana Trappers Association president Tom Barnes said hunters and trappers help manage the wolf population.
“All we ask is that we can manage these wolves,” Barnes said. “Hunting is a tool to do that, just like trapping, for any other animal species.”
A draft of the U.S. Department of Interior proposed rule to lift wolf protections said the roughly 6,000 wolves now living in the Northern Rockies and Great Lakes are enough to prevent the species’ extinction.
The agency says having gray wolves elsewhere — such as the West Coast, parts of New England and elsewhere in the Rockies — is unnecessary for their long-term survival.
A small population of Mexican wolves in the Southwest would continue to receive federal protections, as a distinct subspecies of the gray wolf.
Federal officials have delayed a required analysis of the proposal after a contractor provided the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with information that could have identified scientists on the anonymous review panel. At least two scientists were told they couldn’t serve on the panel because they signed a letter supporting continuing wolf protections.

Considering that the the grey wolf was delisted due to a political bias, not a scientific standpoint. It kills braincells just considering the thought of how some people can claim something ‘science based’ while the vast majority of the scientific community are shaking their heads and [practically] yelling “Don’t do/Stop it”.

What can I do? How can I help? I’m serious… I’m not trying to be a jerk. I feel like there is nothing I can do… sometimes I want to write a letter to Obama telling him how disappointed I am in him and how I wish I could take back my vote (and I voted for him TWICE!).
If journalists would do a good job of reporting, the publicity the manual is making would be a great opportunity to get-the-word-out.

Wow. USFWS is full of it! I just love how this Great Falls Tribune article and some of the comments on it are referring to environmentalists and animal rights supporters as radical and even going so far as to calling them terrorists. Yet for years the anti-wolf crowd went out and illegally killed wolves with a little thing they call SSS “Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up” and gave tips on how to illegally poison wolves with xylitol and all this was before wolves were even taken off The ESA! When wolves were taken off of The ESA, the anti-wolf crowd were openly giving tips to each other on how to torture wolves and make them suffer more when killing them. The anti-wolf crowd has also threatened, bullied, and harassed pro-wolf people to no end. The anti-wolf crowd has corrupted politicians into serving them instead of the will of the majority of people. In fact they even went so far as passing laws to kill wolves and block the public from their rights to contest the killing or have any say in wildlife policies. The anti-wolf crowd has even created radical groups of their own that targets wolves with the main purpose of getting them wiped off the face of The Earth and members of these groups have also been known terrorize anyone who is against their agenda. So how about you folks in the media drop the double standards and sensationalism and start doing some good old fashioned honest reporting for a change!? With everything the anti-wolf crowd has done and is still doing, if anyone should be labeled as radicals and terrorists its them!

I don’t trust Earth First ! In my opinion there on the hunters side Ted Nugent when after two females that express their opinion and both times he attacked them and use God in his defense. I decided to test News First and I attacked Theodore and his relationship with God and they deleted both, I guess they didn’t like me giving my opinion of what I thought of him and his self important relationship with God. When you really read their articles you can tell the way its twisted especially for this manual and the self righteous Hunter who looks down there nose at the trappers and how they don’t want the wolves killed, please give me a break, the wolves are competition and they are using these pathetic losers trying to find their manhood to kill the wolves, they are up to something, I smell a skunk. I originally was not going to give my opinion because I don’t live there all I can do is sign petitions and donate money to the cause, and I know each and every one has to find there own path, but I do feel I need to say be careful, be very, very, careful and watch your back.
