…but I’m a Compassionate Misanthropist

Webster’s defines a misanthropist, as, “one who hates or distrusts all people; to hate man.” Well, that sounds a little harsh—I don’t hate or distrust you people (not most of you, anyway). The thing I can’t stand is what mankind has become: a bully to all other life forms.

But my misanthropy is fueled by compassion, by a love for the Earth that includes its birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants, crustaceans and, yes, even some people.

Still, I’m not all that taken with our rampant success at the expense of all other HumanWeapons_170things that live and breathe. It’s not that I want humans to fail as a species (although on our present course I can see no other end result). I just don’t want to watch them suffer while they go spiraling down the tubes in their single-minded obsession to live up to their collective narcissistic self-esteem.

For the good of all, human or otherwise, Homo sapiens should back off and let Nature sort out the mess we’ve made—before we fuck things up even worse.

  1. You have made a most excellent point, Jim. No need to ever apologize for your disdain of Homo sapiens. It is called facing reality. If Homo sapiens could have somehow collectively (when the population was small) come to grips with its destructive tendencies, and its Humanist bent, there might have been a chance to set things right. In the first pages of John A.Livingston’s book on the Arrogance of the Human Species, it says: “…he (Livingston) maintains that our dysfunctional & profoundly destructive relationship with the natural world is an inescapable result of our belief that the human animal is separate & different from everything else in nature. The corollary of this is our overweening conviction that everything on and in the earth is ours to do with as we please.”
Some of us are beginning to understand this. It is Humanism at its worst, and that, in my opinion is why we are destroying The Earth and all her life.

I am so grateful for this website, Jim.

    • “It is Humanism at its worst, and that, in my opinion is why we are destroying The Earth and all her life.” You’re exactly right, Rosemary. I’ve always thought that humans need to be taken down a notch or two before the rest of live will be treated with the respect they deserve. Thanks for the backup!

      • Thank you, Jim, for your support, too!
I have come to the sad conclusion, after studying John A. Livingston’s works, and witnessing the massive destruction by Homo sapiens upon the Earth, that we really should be gone from the planet, in order to save anything of other life. We started out wrong, and because of our self-deceptions, our greed, our entrenched Humanism, we seem incapable, collectively, of stopping our destructive mindset. Those of us who are able to understand this, and humble ourselves before the Earth, must now work, while we can, to save whatever non-human lives and habitat we can–that should be our real life’s work, don’t you think? That is why your web site is so important!
