RALEIGH, N.C. — Conservation groups are suing North Carolina wildlife regulators, saying a rule that allows coyote hunting endangers the world’s only wild population of about 100 red wolves because hunters easily confuse the two animals.
An attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center filed the lawsuit Thursday in federal court on behalf of three other groups.
The state Wildlife Resources Commission in July approved a permanent regulation allowing coyote hunting in the five-county area of eastern North Carolina that’s known as the Red Wolf Recovery Area. A state judge earlier blocked a temporary rule allowing the hunting in Dare, Tyrrell, Hyde, Washington and Beaufort counties.
The Southern Environmental Law Center says 20 red wolves have died from gunshots since 2008.
A wildlife commission spokesman declined comment until the agency receives the lawsuit.

More lawsuits!
Any lawsuits in Montana Wyoming or Idaho to stop the killing of OUR American Gray Wolf would be most appreciated !

Thank you for posting. I hope it helps wildlife.
This is a critical situation! Unless the law changes, and soon, the Red Woods will become extinct! We can’t legislate moral behavior. Any law enforcement would get after the fact! All Red Wolves Need to get pulled from the woods and little back in the sanctuary until hunting is banned in the recovery areas.
Stupid spellchecker! “Red Wolves” not redwoods! Stupid $50 tablet! Sorry!
They’re both endangered, but at least the tree has a park to protect them…
That crossed my mind. 🙂 I think I fixed the tablet for now? I swear I do not drink! The spellchecker software app guy’s obviously got into the rice wine though! I hope now that everybody knows I wasn’t trippin’ through the mushroom patch with Sasquash man, this will make much more sense? A word of advice for anyone running out to buy those cheap tablets at Big Lots this weekend… immediately disable the spellchecker! Go into the advanced settings, and shut off all the spellchecking options you can find and set the keyboard to default settings. This tablet is by Nextbook, an older, bare bones version 12, just so none of you get stuck with one!
That said, back to Red Wolves. Most critically endangered wolves that most people have never heard of! The Mexican wolves are Gray Wolves. The delisting proposal only relates to Gray Wolves but not Mexican Wolves because Mexican Wolves remain critically endangered, not Red Wolves because they are not Gray Wolves. There will be a quiz in the morning kids…
Basically, one is a sub-species, one is not.
The point I was attempting to make earlier is that neither Red or Mexican wolves have reached a genetically healthy population and should be kept in large enclosures and cared for by wolf biologists and their -assistants and volunteer helpers. Much more education needs to be done with the general public. If somebody can’t tell the difference between a coyote and a Red Wolf, then, duh, don’t shoot! Extinction is Forever! Better yet, once all the Red Wolves are back in their large enclosures with mates and family and nobody gets the bright idea to release them to the ‘wild’, then a much more diverse, healthy population can be allowed to breed, which I hope won’t be tossed out after being captive-raised! That is like making them homeless and alone, not this beautiful fantasy of ‘freedom’. Wolves don’t care so much about where they are as long as they have consistancy and continuity and family. The fences keep the wolf-haters out! If the wolves wanted out, they would dig out, they can really move a lot of dirt when they want to! Living with a family of wolves, I can tell you they are really smart but their social structure is so intricate and aware of each other’s feelings, they actually feel everything emotionally that humans do, maybe more? They act insulted, indignant, sorry, joyous, vengeful if slighted and a whole lot more! While looking at a wolf release video, notice they keep looking back, like aren’t you coming? Then they get a sad look when they know you’re not running too. Then the rejection hits them that you threw them out of your pack and they start looking confused and hurt but keep glancing back to see if you’ve changed your mind… animals that complex emotionally and necessary environmentally need protection with legal teeth! I prefer personhood and from what I am reading now, it is an idea that is catching on, finally! Even if it is a limited personhood? I won’t drag the law books out, I think most folks here grasp the concept.
I and signing it this tablet, will get running ancient linux based laptop!
