Plaintiffs in the case against the wolf killing plan for the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho have learned that at least 7 wolves have been killed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game hired trapper as of January 2nd. It is possible that more have been killed but communication with the trapper is conducted only when the trapper calls out using a satellite phone which is kept turned off most of the time.
From the court filing:
Plaintiffs learned from counsel for defendant Virgil Moore that, as of January 2, 2014, IDFG’s hired hunter-trapper had killed seven wolves within the targeted wolf packs, six by trapping and one by hunting, and that more wolves may have been killed as of today. Defendant Moore’s counsel further advised that IDFG’s only means of communication with the hunter-trapper is a satellite telephone in the hunter-trapper’s possession, and that, to preserve the phone’s batteries, the hunter-trapper turns on the phone only when he places a call.
In response, the plaintiffs have filed a second motion for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) with an expedited briefing schedule.

Plaintiffs, represented by Tim Preso of Earthjustice, include Ralph Maughan and three conservation groups—Defenders of Wildlife, Western Watersheds Project, Wilderness Watch, and Center for Biological Diversity. The case, which was filed yesterday, challenges US Forest Service’s approval of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s plan to exterminate two wolf packs in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness on the grounds that it violates several laws, management plans, and policies which are meant to protect wilderness characteristics, wildlife, and natural processes within wilderness.

This is such sad madness .. How dare they kill our wolves on our public lands.. These noble beings are part of God’s ecosystem they live in harmony with their environment. This is a shameful abuse of power and these officials need to be held accountable for their grievous actions. This is done in the name of hunting elk for 6% of our population that feel they need to kill our wildlife?
This is welfare hunting for these hunting renegades who operate in their cocoon of a very radical reality. These are the officials ” managing ” the wildlife but they don’t know how to spell the word science or understand ecosystems. There are so many elk up there my cousin says they get in his hay.
These people need to understand their crimes against nature and they need to be fired and put in jail for a very long time .. Where they can cause no harm to the fellow beings with whom we share this earth. The ignorance and cruelty that has been visited upon these beautiful beings breaks my heart and hurts my soul … We must win this lawsuit, there must never again be this wanton slaughter of our wolves … The world is watching and our hearts grieve their loss … We need to fight everyday for their existence.

This is terrible. I can’t even find a reason WHY they would hire a trapper to exterminate wolves. I am sure there are other options that can be thought of in order to avoid exterminating animals who I thought were supposed to be protected!

It’s pretty hopeless in Idaho. The governor (Butch Otter) of this state is the one who declared publicly that he wanted to snag the first wolf hunting license. His online bio boasts that he is a lifetime member of Safari Club International. What do you expect? The Idaho legislature just convened, and here are some of his State of the State comments about wolves: “One form of growth we don’t want to encourage is in the wolf population that was imposed on Idaho almost 20 years ago. With your unflinching support, we were able to fight through the opposition of those who would make Idaho into a restricted-use wildlife refuge and take back control of these predators from our federal landlords.
We’re managing them now, and they’re a trophy hunting species. But the population is still growing, and our resources remain at risk. So I’m calling for establishment of a Wolf Control Fund and a State board to direct and manage it. My budget recommendation calls for a one-time allocation of $2 million to get the fund started. That base then would be augmented with continuing annual contributions of $110,000 from the livestock industry and a matching amount from Idaho sportsmen. This three-pronged approach will provide the revenue needed to more effectively control Idaho’s burgeoning wolf population and ease the impact on our livestock and wildlife.”
He’s a ruthless asshole, and Idaho Fish & Game is right there with him. They promote hunting and trapping and do their best to recruit and groom young people as killers. The governor’s official online comment form doesn’t seem to be working, but his office gave me this address as an alternative: governor@gov.idaho.gov .
