F4WM seeks new members

COEUR d’ALENE – A group of North Idaho elk hunters formed a foundation in 2011 that is designed to incentivize more winter trapping of gray wolves in528624c939a88_preview-620 the Idaho panhandle – and now they want to take it statewide

The Foundation for Wildlife Management, or F4WM, has created a website and Facebook page to generate interest in starting new chapters and recruiting new members.

“We are in a hardball fight for our hunting heritage in Idaho,” said former Idaho Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Anthony McDermott, who now sits on the board of the foundation.

According to McDermott, the mission of the foundation is to encourage the trapping of gray wolves in areas where the wolf predation is excessive.

“The foundation is totally focused on restoring the elk in our backcountry areas,” he said.

The board of the foundation has found that trapping the wolves is the best way to manage the predator. McDermott said wolves are smart animals that learn very quickly how to evade traditional hunters.

“This organization has figured out that trapping is the answer,” he said. “But trapping is also very expensive.”

So, the foundation offers up to a $500 reimbursement to a successful gray wolf trapper who can provide receipts for their expenses.

F4WM has 278 members in the Idaho panhandle area, and they just started another chapter in Lewiston last week. The organization has also attracted interest from people in Salmon, Challis, Riggins and the Bitterroot Valley.

Cost of membership is $35 annually and most of that money is used to reimburse wolf trappers.

In 2011 and 2012, the F4WM was able to reimburse 22 trappers, and paid 14 trappers so far this season.

  1. This is so heinous in so many levels
The fish and wildlife commissioner should not be sitting on this foundations board .. Such a co glove of interest. He should recuse himself!
Plus this area has been for a long time the hotbed of the Timothy McVeigh types… They are hotheads with guns and don’t know crap about science
They should not be running these programs to tell the Fish and Game what to do PERIOD
They can give input but running the state program from their “foundation” is criminal
There is no parent in the room to stop from their ignorant and greedy ways !
They need to be gagged and removed from area. They don’t know what they are doing.. Local yokels with guns wanting even more elk and a real phony name for their organization.
Fish and Game needs to be called down hard on this for an indiscretion by one of theirs!
Sue them for conflict of interest!
    Those are America’s wolves too.
Leaving this to the states Mr Obama, spells SLAUGHTER and lots of misbehaved officials are in for the hunt.
    Unelievably disgusting

    • Sorry ” conflict of interest” in garbled section
Larry Schoen a county commissioner from Bilaine Idaho
did come out and say recently that having hunters run these depts is not the right balance …
Somebody still has common sense and probably some science !
Thank you, you are doing your job properly commissioner Schoen

  2. The more people have the more they want…unfortunately animals will have “no say” in how far the so called “hunters” will go for…”fun”??? But other non killers have to find a way to STOP this MADNES!!! These legal killers are just another way to stay in the stone age and do as they please. I am not animal eater but,I could understand when someone is starving to death and there is nothing else to eat. Mind you, this is rare and only could happen in extreme situations in our “modern” world. If you have money to purchase firearm, car, driver’s and “hunting” licence than, the chances you can afford to eat something other than animals flesh. In addition without the fangs, the gun,the claws, the traps and other killing methods the chances anyone can kill an animal and eat from it’s bloody still alive body are none! This is to say that we are not CARNIVORES! Nor should humans be eliminating another living being for any reason or just to please our own ridiculous “needs”!!! “Hunters” are cowards!!!There are no special skills required, no brain, no tactics, no special diploma either to shoot at defenceless, innocent and clueless animals!!! “Hunters” are arrogant and ignorant and have the audacity to kill and take what is not theirs in a first place. And all they leave behind is BLOODY trails and the disappearance of precious and very important living beings for the balance of our already fragile echo system. All of the above proves that “hunters” are brainless, ignorant and extremely selfish. Shame on SOCIETY letting these morons to go that far and beyond any morals, ethics and respect for others, nature and wild life. I don’t want to imagine what is going to happened in a few decades if the non killers don’t do something about all of the above???

  3. There are about 5.2 million cattle in Montana. There were 65 confirmed cattle kills by wolves in 2012, per Montana Department of Livestock, Livestock Loss Board. That is 0.002% kill by wolves. Many ranchers in Montana are grazing on national forest lands, 772 such permits in Montana and 3776 permits to graze on BLM land. There are 23,000 such permits in 16 western states. So, many of the affected ranchers are on public land screaming wolf. Many, vastly most, do nothing to manage their stock with nonlethal means, such as is required in Oregon. With better husbandry of their stock they could actually make more money and live with wolves. But that is not the way their fathers did it and not the way their grandfathers did it with open range and free grazing and now grazing and encroaching on wildlife for a pittance, $1.35 per animal unit, and really at the public’s expense. By the way they are reimbursed for losses. Are ranchers the most entitled people in the world? They act like public land is their land and they have a right to graze it. Or are hunters the most entitled thinkers? The sportsmen want elk to be game farmed in the wilderness by marginalizing or eliminating predators. Or are trappers the most entitled thinkers? They are endangering others’ pets and infringing on others’ recreation with traps on public lands. Or is it FWP, an agency that seems to be working full time for hunters, trappers, and ranchers, and fishermen rather than wilderness, balanced wildlife ecology and tourism. Wolves bring in $35 million extra in wolf tourism to the Great Yellowstone Area, with about 85 wolves in Yellowstone that makes one wolf worth many ranchers’ entire herd. Two myths of wolf haters and killers (FWP, sportsmen, ranchers, trappers, and Wildlife Services) are elk depredation and cattle depredation. But these wolf haters are a lot like the republican mind: Impervious to facts, logic and science. They live in an alternative universe where they can just make up their own facts, logic and science and go wild, such as in ID, with their myths, lies, and folklore to justify farming elk in the wilderness and ignore the majority’s opinion that wolves are wanted in the wilderness and that wolves are good for the wilderness. It is actually man, particularly the groups mentioned, that are bad for the wilderness and even elk herds. With the alliance of the groups mentioned we have a total sick distortion of what wilderness should be about.
