CATHLAMET, Wash. – The man considered the ringleader of a group of poachers who called themselves the “Kill ‘Em All Boys” was sentenced to a year and a month in prison Monday for illegally killing wildlife.
Mick Gordon, pictured below, pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree animal cruelty, hunting black bear, cougar, bobcat and lynx with dogs, second-degree criminal trespass and third-degree malicious mischief.
Washington Fish and Wildlife officers said the group used a device they called “the permission slip,” which is a metal bar used to break locks blocking access to prime poaching territory on timber company lands. They even had a videotape made of the bar in use because they wanted to sell the contraption on eBay.
Undercover officers infiltrated the group as part of the investigation. Later wildlife officers seized trophy heads and guns from Gordon’s garage.
Gordon, a registered nurse, was also accused of torturing one of his hunting dogs with a shock collar as well as not giving it care for porcupine wounds; the dog eventually died.
Prosecutors on Monday asked for an exceptionally long sentence, saying Gordon had “run amok.”
“I’m deeply sorry for what I’ve done,” Gordon told the judge. “It’ll never happen again”
Judge Michael J. Sullivan called Gordon an aberration.
“When I look at you and what you’ve done here, which seems to be a highly organized crime spree, I just don’t know how to put those two together,” the judge said.
The sentence was much stiffer than normal. In other recent animal cruelty cases, defendants received sentences of about 3.2 months on average.
Washington state officials have also suspended Gordon’s nursing license.
According to state health department documents, Gordon told an undercover officer he put a shock collar on a child’s neck, turned it to its highest setting and shocked the child. He also told the officer he despised his bed-ridden, elderly patients.

Yes! This judge saw through the courtroom contrite and realized that he most certainly is an aberration. Even with this sentence being longer than normal, it’s still not enough. There is something very sick with this man. “He hates his bedridden, elderly parents”? He put a shock collar on a child? If he’s done that to humans can you imagine the pain and suffering he’s done the animals where he didn’t get caught?
No, I can’t imagine. And yes, he should have gotten a much longer sentence for all his crimes. Like me at first, you misread the word parents–it was patients. I’m sure that’s why the judge pulled his nurses license. There have been other nurses who were serial killers, abusing and suffocating their dedridden patients to get off the sense of power over the frail and helpless.
I bet killing animals for prizes would make this man’s world rock.
That would be too legal for him. Speaking of which, why are contest hunts legal, but what he did cost him 13 months in prison. It wasn’t the cruelty of the killing that made him different from other hunters, he just wasn’t playing by the rules.
Hah. You are so right. It is so shocking, what is legal and how bad he was to be a rule-breaker. Doesn’t seem too different on many levels. Is there any national legislation proposed to make these contests illegal nation-wide? Do you think it is impossible and must be fought contest by contest?
@ Karen DeBraal, I think the hunting contests will have to be fought state by state. I did a quick search on my state’s predator hunting association page, and found 15 coyote killing contests in Oklahoma. That’s only what I found without an exhaustive search. I think 13 months is too light a sentence. I know of a young lady, a mother of 4, that got 30 years for selling $10 worth of pot in OK. Until lawmakers get change their priorities or unless enough of us people push them they won’t increase the penalties of animal abusers. This guy was ‘hunting’ so I think that is partly why he got a longer sentence.

I am still in shock and that are not afraid at all. They both had hundreds of different size animals’s skins lined up?! It’s obvious they kill everything that moves. It depends… what those people are doing would be utterly illegal over here in Western Europe. (Illegal in the East, as well, but hardly prosecuted there…) In the glorious USA, if they DID pay the obligatory blood money to the right authorities, they can do with wildlife pretty much WHATEVER they happen to want. Torture, maim, kill, abuse sexually… there is hardly ANY protection for wildlife by federal law or state regulations. And if they happen to kill some endangered animal, all it takes is “Ooops, I thought it was a coyote!” (or whatever other VERMING comes in handy locally.) It’s ONLY illegal if they didn’t buy the right LICENSE for it or did their killing in an area not released to the public. And it’s only “animal abuse” if they hurt a PET – except, of course, if that pet suffered and died in some “legally set” trap. THIS IS THE LAW IN THE USA! If you don’t like it, work on changing it.
Thank you…I agree your you. I am working very hard to change the old 17th century thinking as much as I can. But, I feel that many people are nonchalant, ignorant or oblivious. I don’t know many who will do what I do every day. When I share my thoughts and concerns all I hear is “That is life”…uhhh? What kind of answer is that? We all make what “life”is today. I seem to have really heard time with ignorance. I know well that it starts with me and can only be proud…but is not enough to make some quick changes for the better. This totally makes me want to vomit. I cannot find words vile enough to describe how I feel. I am one of the 84% of Idaho residents who do not engage in recreational killing, and I am broken hearted and enraged. The $2 million from the General Fund is from all taxpayers in Idaho. The Fish & Game’s usual excuse for excluding all viewpoints except hunters’ and trappers’ is that only hunters and trappers pay the fees that support the department. What’s their excuse this time?
It’s always shocking. But this one is different because there’s a clear link between his abuse of animals and abuse of vulnerable people – children and elderly. The only thing standing between him and them is laws to protect them. Animals aren’t so lucky and are vulnerable to these psychopaths. I hope he has a good time in prison.

They took away his nursing license, but yes, he should have got 13 years, not months. With good behavior, he could be out in May.
I hate to say this but as a non-practicing Jew, to the *Kill Em All Gang* those animals they murdered represent the Jew. The Muslim. The Black Man. The Homosexual. Deep down that is who these psychos really want to kill. They want to kill those of us who are not like them. If they had their way, we’d all be dead (us and the animals). There would be nothing left and eventually they would turn on each other.
I wish prisoners hated animal abusers as much as they hate pedophiles. Oh, come to think of it, if that were true the authorities would just have another excuse not to send them to prison. The poor dears might get what was coming to them.
