As the scientist who helped eradicate smallpox he certainly know a thing or two about extinction.
And now Professor Frank Fenner, emeritus professor of microbiology at the Australian National University, has predicted that the human race will be extinct within the next 100 years.
He has claimed that the human race will be unable to survive a population explosion and ‘unbridled consumption.’
Fenner told The Australian newspaper that ‘homo sapiens will become extinct, perhaps within 100 years.’
‘A lot of other animals will, too,’ he added.
‘It’s an irreversible situation. I think it’s too late. I try not to express that because people are trying to do something, but they keep putting it off.’
Since humans entered an unofficial scientific period known as the Anthropocene – the time since industrialisation – we have had an effect on the planet that rivals any ice age or comet impact, he said.
Fenner, 95, has won awards for his work in helping eradicate the variola virus that causes smallpox and has written or co-written 22 books.
He announced the eradication of the disease to the World Health Assembly in 1980 and it is still regarded as one of the World Health Organisation’s greatest achievements.
He was also heavily involved in helping to control Australia’s myxomatosis problem in rabbits.
Last year official UN figures estimated that the world’s population is currently 6.8 billion. It is predicted to exceed seven billion by the end of 2011.
Fenner blames the onset of climate change for the human race’s imminent demise.
He said: ‘We’ll undergo the same fate as the people on Easter Island.
‘Climate change is just at the very beginning. But we’re seeing remarkable changes in the weather already.’
‘The Aborigines showed that without science and the production of carbon dioxide and global warming, they could survive for 40,000 or 50,000 years.
‘But the world can’t. The human species is likely to go the same way as many of the species that we’ve seen disappear.’

Retired professor Stephen Boyden, a colleague of Professor Fenner, said that while there was deep pessimism among some ecologists, others had a more optimistic view.
‘Frank may well be right, but some of us still harbour the hope that there will come about an awareness of the situation and, as a result the revolutionary changes necessary to achieve ecological sustainability.’
Simon Ross, the vice-chairman of the Optimum Population Trust, said: ‘Mankind is facing real challenges including climate change, loss of bio-diversity and unprecedented growth in population.’
Professor Fenner’s chilling prediction echoes recent comments by Prince Charles who last week warned of ‘monumental problems’ if the world’s population continues to grow at such a rapid pace.
And it comes after Professor Nicholas Boyle of Cambridge University said that a ‘Doomsday’ moment will take place in 2014 – and will determine whether the 21st century is full of violence and poverty or will be peaceful and prosperous.

In 2006 another esteemed academic, Professor James Lovelock, warned that the world’s population may sink as low as 500 million over the next century due to global warming.
He claimed that any attempts to tackle climate change will not be able to solve the problem, merely buy us time.

Never heard of the source. I found the article on VHET’s (the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement) FB page and liked its premise as well as its positive implications for the future of the planet Earth.

Thanks, Rebecca, Donna for your thoughts. It is clear that Homo sapiens is a very sick, delusional species which cannot accept reality. We continue to rationalize away the severity of the systemic illness Planet Earth suffers, because of humans. As Sea Shepherd leader, Paul Watson says, “:humans are insane.” Global Climate Change worsens as we speak, & the U.S. is now clamoring for whatever oil shale, tar sands & natural gas it can suck out, bomb out, bulldoze out, drill out, of the western states, with this administration already allocating some 800,000 acres of federal/state lands for fossil fuel extraction. If this is not a glaring example of an insane species, what is? Idaho sits upon billions of crude oil deposits like the Alberta Tar Sands–and this government is ready to get it. Most American (asleep at their wheels), support the XL pipeline, because of “jobs & the economy.” Nature is now bought and sold like any other “commodity.”
Save whatever lands you can for whatever native wild animals you can, while you are still able. Maybe some coyotes, wolves, etc will make it, at least for awhile after we are gone. The Earth is in Hospice Mode now. May the non-humans Rest in Peace.
To all : have you ever viewed “19 and growing” on cable TV ? The sweet woman with a goodman hubby and expecting her 20th child ? Very popular program, too. And it’s idiots like these that are killing the planet. I don’t know what their philosophy is , God will provide, the Bible urges us to ‘multiply’, We Can Afford a Large Family, or what is behind their non-stop breeding but as long as we, Humans, don’t curtail our thoughtless belief that without children we are not fulfilling our obligation to Life, as long as Women keep thinking that without bringing babies forth their life means nothing, then we will surely hasten our own demise. Fortunately the planet will continue to travel through space and exhale a cleaner breath, free of the pestilence Humans had suffocated Her with. I say the sexual relaxation in human behaviour also is at fault , much of it is accepted without a raised eyebrow and more babies are born to more young girls; this is not acceptable or sustainable; it should be fought, not answered with an excuse such as ‘times have changed’ .
Sexual relations do not have to result in more babies being born–there are many forms of birth control these days (something the couple in that irresponsible show you mentioned, “19 and counting,” doesn’t seem to realize).
They DO realize there is prevention . But they chose to breed. Their excuses are many as I pointed out . They prefer not to care or they do not believe that humans are destroyers. Some view the truth as a plot, a scheme rooted in atheism, communism, The Extreme Left and even some lie spread by “Aliens”.

The only problem is the irreparable damage we will have done to the environment and other living things – just think, a barren ocean, no top predators or large mammals. I don’t know what will happen to trees and plants. I forget who it was who said the Earth would do just fine without us – thrive without us, in fact. Oh yeah, it was Dr. Jonas Salk!
