Loading bullets in a rifle. – Source: Breakfast
The man shot in bush in a hunting accident east of Opotiki yesterday waited several hours to be airlifted to hospital.
The 22-year-old was out deer hunting with his father and brother when the accident happened, police say.
He was shot in the torso when one of the hunting party discharged a high-powered rifle around 10am.
His father stayed with him to provide first aid while his brother ran for help.
The brother found a family friend with a personal locator beacon, which they activated, around 1.30pm.
Taupo’s Greenlea rescue helicopter was then sent to the location of the signal. Rescuers found the man and his father and flew them to Rotorua Hospital.
He has had surgery and is in a serious but stable condition.
Police are investigating and are today returning to the area where the man was shot.
“It is early in the investigation and I will not speculate prematurely on the outcome,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen.
“What I will say is that this young man is extremely lucky, especially given the amount of time that passed between the incident and reaching the hospital.”
Mr Standen reminded hunters to take safety steps while out in the bush.
“That includes appropriate clothing and safety equipment as well as communication equipment, such as locator beacons that can save vital minutes and hours.
“Most importantly it means abiding by the number one rule of hunting – always identify your target.”
[Apparently a bullet-proof vest should be considered “appropriate clothing and safety equipment”]

Big deal. It’s a pity he lived. One less asshole out there shooting innocent sentient beings.
Darwinism at work – if hunting is getting back in touch with your primal roots – I say don’t use anything modernity has produced to pick them up – or treat them – no helicopter, no penicilin – let them get back to their roots indeed. Let them immerse themselves in the life of a hunter … in fact guns should be banned – they should only be allowed spears – with blunt stones on the end.
Right, if they call themselves hunters, they shouldn’t be allowed to use automobiles or modern medicine or to live in houses with electricity, etc., etc.
Just came to thought of the bumper sticker that reads I LOVE HUNTING ACCIDENTS … the only thing ‘hunters’ are good for is when they happen upon a crime scene !!
