  1. When I said to a man who is a flesh-eater, “As long as people kill and eat animals there will be killing of human beings, “he responded, to my surprise, by saying: “Yes, it’s not a great step from killing a cow to killing a man.” Familiarity with slaying animals destroys the sense of sacredness of life. The unspeakable horrors of war are perpetuated by flesh-eating people, who have no regard for the life of dumb animals.

    • I always find it amazing how far back in time thinkers of animal welfare go, it’s not new or unique to care about other sentient beings, and how many many people today and throughout the ages have appreciated the sacredness of life.

      • Well it’s true that more don’t appreciate life than do – but I mean for those who try to sell that way of thinking as ‘normal’, I’ve read accounts where it is implied we are delusional because we believe our morality is superior to everyone else’s! To hear them tell it, nobody considers animal rights or cruelty immoral or wrong. They are wrong – that’s what I meant. Many great thinkers and philosophers consider it.

  2. Thanks, Jim for your insight into insane Homo sapiens. Perhaps more humans might have gained wisdom and appreciation for this planet and non-human life if it just stopped making Humanist excuses for this species arrogant behavior. Sure, there are some on this blog & others, who have gained insight, and have shed Humanism, but the majority of the 7 + billion (and growing) just continue the unthinking, self-centered, arrogance indicative of H.sapiens. That is why this species is getting worse every day.
More non-humans are killed now than ever before. More wild lands are dying under the bulldozers. More radiation is spewing into oceans, soils and air. More human wars everywhere. We have not learned a thing. Most humans still make twisted, confused excuses for what is happening. It is the insanity of our species, our denial that is killing all life. If humans were no longer here, perhaps this planet might have a chance, perhaps some species might make it, but there isn’t much time.

  3. Just saw this from “The War on Climate Change” you posted, Jim:
‘In his classic “Collapse,” Diamond warns, “a significant fraction of wild species, populations and genetic diversity has been lost. And at present rates, a large percent of the rest will disappear in a half century.’
