Well, I don’t think it is religion itself (and it isn’t just Christianity) – the basic moral tenets are good. It’s humanity’s creative way of using religion to rationalize and justify their bad behavior:
Want to steal another country’s resources and kill them if they don’t hand them over willingly? Say God told you to do it.
Want to divorce your wife but your religion doesn’t allow it? Create a new one!
Lie, cheat and steal all week long? That’s ok, go to confession and all will be forgiven. Then you can go back to lying, cheating and stealing on Monday.
It’s a wonder the masses really put up with it.
